BAE Systems Expands Portfolio with Acquisition of Malloy Aeronautics
BAE Systems has officially acquired Malloy aeronautics, a company renowned for its all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) tailored for both civilian and military applications.
Integration into FalconWorks
Malloy Aeronautics will now operate under FalconWorks, the innovative research and progress division of BAE Systems’ Air sector. This strategic move is aimed at enhancing BAE’s technological offerings.
Commitment to Innovation
“The addition of Malloy’s innovative capabilities to our FalconWorks® team is incredibly promising. This acquisition aligns with our goal to broaden our portfolio and provide our clients with state-of-the-art solutions,” stated Dave Holmes, Managing Director of FalconWorks.
Advanced Heavy Lift Capabilities
Malloy aeronautics specializes in heavy-lift quadcopters that can transport payloads ranging from 68kg to 300kg over short to medium distances. These advanced platforms are designed for versatility, offering interchangeable features that significantly reduce costs and operational time compared to traditional methods, while also minimizing risks to personnel and valuable assets.
continued Operations and Collaboration
With a dedicated workforce of around 80 employees, Malloy will maintain its operations in Berkshire, ensuring ongoing support for its current clientele. BAE Systems and Malloy have been collaborating as 2021 to advance innovative UAS solutions, and this acquisition will further enhance their joint efforts in developing cutting-edge technologies for a global market.
Strategic Vision for the Future
simon Barnes, Group Managing Director of BAE Systems’ Air sector, remarked, “This acquisition is a key part of our strategy to invest in groundbreaking technologies that enhance our existing capabilities and meet the evolving needs of our customers. We believe that the collaboration between our two organizations will lead to important advancements in uncrewed aerial systems and related technologies.”
Innovative developments in UAS
Engineers from both BAE Systems and Malloy Aeronautics are currently working on the T-650, a 300kg all-electric heavy-lift UAS, which aims to provide a cost-effective and sustainable rapid response solution for military, security, and civilian applications. Last year, the partnership successfully demonstrated the T-600 electric uncrewed demonstrator aircraft, which launched an anti-submarine torpedo during the NATO exercise REPMUS (Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime uncrewed Systems).
Looking Ahead
Reflecting on the partnership, Oriol Badia, Chief Operating Officer at Malloy Aeronautics, stated, “Over the past decade, we have transformed our vision of sustainable electric heavy-lift technology into a reality, thanks to our dedicated team. This new phase with BAE Systems will enable us to merge the agility of a young company with the extensive resources of an established leader, allowing us to meet customer demands and deliver innovative products like the T-650 more rapidly.”
