This case study highlights how Plettenberg crafted a customized propulsion system for Feller Yachting’s autonomous light transport vessel, Ella, designed for inland waterways.
Identifying the Challenge
Feller Yachting stands out as a premier designer and manufacturer of boats and light transport vessels. In a groundbreaking research initiative, the company introduced Ella, an innovative uncrewed light transport vessel tailored for inland shipping. Spanning 15 meters, Ella is among the pioneering electric vessels designed to operate entirely autonomously. To realize this vision, Feller Yachting sought the expertise of Plettenberg to create a specialized propulsion system. The motors needed to be specifically adapted to meet project demands, capable of functioning in challenging environments, and exhibit exceptional efficiency.
Crafting the Solution
Collaborating closely with Feller yachting, plettenberg engineered a propulsion system that precisely met Ella’s unique specifications. The final design incorporates two NOVA 15-50 motors equipped with water cooling and an external motor controller for propulsion, alongside a NOVA 15-30 featuring an integrated controller for the bow thruster. These motors are housed in a sealed enclosure with an IP 54 rating, ensuring durability and reliability.
Realizing the Benefits
Feller Yachting successfully acquired a customized propulsion system that met all its operational criteria. Throughout the growth phase, the Plettenberg team provided essential engineering and integration assistance. The resulting propulsion system boasts industry-leading power-to-weight ratios and efficiency metrics. The official launch of Ella occurred on March 3rd, 2023, followed by its inaugural test runs in the vicinity of Dortmund, Germany.
