Introduction of the Lanner Tactical Drone at Eurosatory 2024
During the Eurosatory 2024 exhibition, Edge Autonomy, in collaboration with Safran Electronics & Defense, introduced the Lanner, a newly adapted version of the Penguin Vertical Takeoff and landing (VTOL) uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS).
Tailored for Tactical operations
The Lanner model is derived from the established Penguin UAS platform and has been specifically tailored to fulfill the requirements of the French armed forces’ SDTL (Light Tactical Drone System) initiative.
This innovative configuration allows the Penguin drone to perform a variety of missions simultaneously, thanks to its dual payload capability. It can be equipped with Electro-Optical/Infra-Red systems, electronic warfare tools (such as radio signal detection and jamming), radar, and munitions, enabling it to conduct intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations across both land and maritime environments.
European Leadership in Tactical UAVs
manufactured and developed in Europe, the Lanner configuration positions Safran Electronics & Defense and Edge Autonomy as frontrunners in the tactical UAV sector. This collaboration enhances Safran’s bid in response to the SDTL tender aimed at equipping the French military.
The combined expertise of these two companies presents a distinctive blend of established experience and cutting-edge technology, offering a comprehensive range of tactical UAS that can address the diverse operational requirements of the French Ministry of Armed Forces and its allies.
Expert Insights on the Partnership
Josh Stinson, Chief Growth officer at Edge Autonomy, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We are thrilled to join forces with Safran Electronics & Defense to deliver a top-tier UAS for the French armed forces.”
“The Lanner configuration leverages the proven capabilities of Edge Autonomy’s Penguin UAS, combined with Safran’s expertise in optronics, position, navigation, and timing (PNT), UAV airworthiness, and mission systems.”
Alexandre Ziegler, executive VP of the Defense global Business unit at Safran Electronics & Defense, remarked, “Our collaboration with Edge Autonomy has allowed us to enhance the Penguin drone to meet the specific and rigorous demands of the Ministry of the Armed Forces. The Penguin is a high-performance, combat-tested drone with extensive flight hours across various conditions.”
