Volz Servos Partners with Orbital for Advanced UAV Engine solutions
Volz Servos, a leading manufacturer of electromechanical actuators, has been chosen by the specialized engine producer Orbital to provide its DA 15-T throttle servo for the innovative N20 engine designed for the ScanEagle unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
innovative Technology Behind the DA 15-T Throttle Servo
The DA 15-T throttle servo from Volz employs a brushless motor along with a contactless position sensor, making it ideal for challenging “on-engine” throttle actuator applications. The larger DA 20-T model has been a trusted choice among UAV engine manufacturers for years due to its extraordinary performance and dependability. The newly developed DA 15-T caters specifically to small unmanned aerial systems (SUAS) that demand a more compact and lightweight solution. Orbital has successfully validated the DA 15-T for use in the ScanEagle engine, completing rigorous FAR 33.49 engine durability tests, and also assessments for extreme temperatures, electromagnetic interference (EMI), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and flight performance. Internally, Volz has conducted extensive bench testing on this servo, accumulating over 4,000 hours and surpassing 7 million load cycles without any failures.
Commitment to Quality and customization
Phillipp Volz, the CEO of Volz Servos, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “Having supplied Orbital for several years, we are thrilled to provide our new DA 15-T throttle servo, wich meets the stringent reliability standards of the N20 ScanEagle engine.” He added, “We look forward to contributing to the initial production phase of this cutting-edge UAV engine program.”
Mark juhrig, the Chief Technology Officer at Volz Servos, highlighted the customization efforts made for this project: “We tailored this servo to align with Orbital’s specific interface requirements. Each unit undergoes comprehensive testing, including highly accelerated stress screening (HASS), and a detailed data package accompanies every production servo.”
