SkyDrop Achieves Milestone in Drone Delivery with CAA Approval

SkyDrop, a extensive provider of autonomous drone delivery solutions encompassing hardware, software, and patents, has successfully integrated the Kongsberg Geospatial IRIS Ground Control Station application. This integration was crucial for obtaining the necessary approvals from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in New Zealand, allowing the company to initiate suburban drone delivery services.

Following an extensive evaluation of SkyDrop’s technology and operational protocols, the CAA granted the approval, marking a significant step forward for the company.

First of Its Kind in New Zealand

SkyDrop proudly claims the title of the first organization authorized for live store-to-door drone deliveries in New Zealand, commencing operations in the town of Huntly, located in Waikato.

To date, SkyDrop has secured three essential approvals for its drone delivery operations. These include permissions for specific Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, allowing drones to function at their maximum range for last-mile deliveries, and also the ability to conduct deliveries over people and property. Additionally, they have established the first revenue-generating last-mile drone delivery hub in New Zealand.

Innovative Risk Assessment Methodology

The approvals granted to SkyDrop were based on a comprehensive risk assessment framework known as Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA). This methodology, widely utilized in Europe, Canada, and other regions, provides a transferable model for drone operators seeking similar approvals in different markets.

advanced Control Technology

The Kongsberg Geospatial IRIS Ground Control Station technology is designed to be compatible with various vehicle autopilots, enabling a single remote operator to monitor and manage multiple drones and sensor feeds together. This system also offers real-time calculations for aircraft separation, facilitating BVLOS operations.

Built on Kongsberg Geospatial’s TerraLens SDK, the IRIS Terminal delivers sophisticated real-time 2D and 3D visualizations of airborne tracks and weather conditions, along with alerts and warnings, empowering a single operator to oversee a complex airspace environment effectively.
