Red Cat Holdings has joined forces with Palantir Technologies to enhance the Black Widow drones with cutting-edge visual navigation software and a state-of-the-art operating system.

Innovative Navigation Solutions

Palantir’s refined AI-driven software utilizes real-time satellite imagery to facilitate precise navigation, wholly independent of GPS or radio signals. This advancement substantially boosts the Black Widow’s autonomous capabilities in combat scenarios.

Enhancing aerial intelligence

The collaboration introduces Palantir’s VNav software and Warp Speed OS,aligning with Red Cat’s vision to shape the future of aerial intelligence. This partnership is especially timely, as the Black Widow has been selected for the U.S. Army’s Short range Reconnaissance Program, enabling the deployment of electronic warfare-resistant small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) that do not rely on GPS.By leveraging current satellite imagery, Palantir’s VNav technology effectively addresses the challenge of long-range inertial drift.

Key Advantages of VNav Technology

Palantir’s VNav technology offers several significant benefits for the Black Widow drones:

  • Integration of Satellite Imagery: Palantir can direct partner satellites to gather the latest imagery, providing drones with essential situational awareness and enabling highly accurate navigation without the risk of long-range drift.
  • Alternative Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (A-PNT): VNav technology equips drones with an alternative PNT source, employing advanced computer vision techniques for visual inertial odometry and reference matching against satellite imagery across various visual spectrums, all without GPS reliance. This ensures operational effectiveness in electronic warfare environments.
  • Edge Runtime capabilities: VNav’s visual navigation algorithms are executed directly on the drone, functioning entirely offline through Palantir’s Edge Runtime.
