Introducing the SDI170 Quartz MEMS Tactical-Grade IMU by EMCORE Corporation
EMCORE Corporation has unveiled the SDI170 Quartz MEMS (Micro-Electromechanical Systems) tactical-grade inertial measurement unit (IMU),a product free from ITAR restrictions, tailored for high-precision applications in both commercial and defence sectors. this includes uses in UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), ROVs (remotely operated vehicles), and various unmanned and autonomous systems.
Enhanced Performance and Reliability
The SDI170 is designed as a direct replacement for the HG1700-AG58 Ring Laser Gyroscope (RLG) IMU,boasting superior performance, adaptability, and a notably improved MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) rating, particularly in rugged conditions. With no components subject to wear, this unit is perfect for applications requiring long-term continuous operation, offering extraordinary linear accelerometer performance.
Exceptional Specifications
This IMU operates effectively under dynamic conditions, handling ±1,074 degrees per second and standard linear acceleration of ±50 G (with an optional ±70 G). It achieves a gyro bias of 1°/hr and an accelerometer bias stability of 1 mg, alongside a remarkably low angle Random Walk (ARW) of 0.02°/√hr across a temperature range of -55 °C to +85 °C, even in vibrational environments. The SDI170S ARW performance is five times superior to that of the legacy RLG IMU it replaces, leveraging the reliable and precise quartz MEMS technology found in EMCORE’s SDI500 tactical-grade IMU. This quartz technology facilitates the mass production of finely machined sensor structures, ensuring large signal output and thermal stability.
seamless Communication and Longevity
The SDI170 IMU utilizes a high-speed SDLC protocol over the widely accepted RS-422 electrical interface, ensuring compatibility and high-precision performance. It features continuous built-in Test (BIT) monitoring and electromagnetic interference (EMI) protection, all within a compact 33 cubic inch design.EMCORE’s SDI170 promises a dependable operational and storage life of 20 years without the need for calibration, even in demanding, mission-critical scenarios.
Industry impact and Future Prospects
David Hoyh, EMCORE’s Director of Sales & marketing for navigation products, stated, “The launch of the SDI170 IMU represents a pivotal advancement in the industry and for EMCORE. Customers globally now have choice sourcing options for this widely utilized tactical performance package. The SDI170 IMU allows us to provide enhanced performance at a reduced cost, all while maintaining a form factor and electrical interface that seamlessly replaces older RLG IMU technologies.”
