Triad RF Systems has recently supplied a power amplifier to a company specializing in stratospheric communication platforms, aimed at extending the operational range of wireless communication links on high-altitude pseudo-satellite (HAPS) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The identity of the platform’s designer adn manufacturer remains confidential, but they are known for delivering innovative solutions in communications, data relay, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) for various sectors, including space agencies, military organizations, and commercial enterprises.
Initial simulations conducted by the client, prior to integrating Triad RF’s power amplifier, indicated that the communication link could function effectively up to approximately 100 miles from the base station. However, during a test flight, the connection began to falter at around 75 miles, ultimately resulting in a complete loss of communication with the UAV.
In response to this challenge, Triad’s technical team recommended that the client enhance the ground tracking station with an RF power amplifier and update it with the UAV’s last known coordinates. After enduring 10 hours of silence, the connection was re-established in just 5 minutes with the assistance of the Triad power amplifier, even though the UAV was now located 200 miles away. Post-upgrade, the communication link successfully maintained a signal over a distance of 250 miles.
