Textron Systems Unveils the Cottonmouth Advanced Reconnaissance Vehicle

Textron Systems has successfully finalized the prototype of the Cottonmouth Advanced Reconnaissance Vehicle (ARV) under the ground Vehicle System Other Transaction Authority, in collaboration with the National Advanced Mobility Consortium.

From Concept too Prototype: A Rapid Development Journey

The development of the Cottonmouth ARV commenced after extensive evaluations of the Alpha prototype over the past year, culminating in the Critical Design Review completed in April 2022.Remarkably, the prototype was constructed within a four-month timeframe, overcoming critically important supply chain challenges that have affected the defense sector as a whole.

Meeting Military Demands: A Strategic Partnership

Since its introduction last year, the Cottonmouth ARV has garnered attention, especially after Textron Systems was chosen by the United States Marine Corps (USMC) as one of two firms tasked with delivering a prototype. the Textron team is diligently working towards a delivery target set for december 2022.

David Phillips, Senior Vice president of Land and Sea Systems at Textron, remarked, “The team has excelled in achieving the necessary design milestones to produce a vehicle that not only meets but surpasses our clients’ top priorities, all within a year. given the intricate nature of this build, it’s a significant achievement.”

Designing for the Future: The USMC’s Vision

The USMC is in need of a versatile fleet to support its upcoming Mobile Reconnaissance Battalions. These vehicles must be lightweight, interconnected, and highly mobile, with the ability to traverse coastal water challenges such as bays, estuaries, rivers, and light surf. The Cottonmouth ARV, with its innovative design tailored to these specifications, is positioned to be the most sophisticated military vehicle to date. Its open system architecture facilitates the integration of various mission roles and capabilities, both current and future.

Testing and Validation: Ensuring Excellence

The initial phase of Contractor Verification Testing for the vehicle took place in early August 2022 at Textron Systems in the greater New Orleans area. This prosperous testing marks a crucial step in confirming that the vehicle aligns with the USMC’s Force Design 2030 objectives and is the first of several rigorous evaluations it will undergo prior to being handed over for government-led testing.

Future-Proofing Military Capabilities

“While we cannot always foresee future requirements, we can guarantee that our vehicle systems are robust, survivable, dependable, and adaptable for future enhancements,” Phillips stated. “Whether it involves loitering munitions, counter-drone technologies, mesh networks, or innovations yet to be conceived, this vehicle will empower our clients to integrate them seamlessly.”
