Textron Uncrewed Technologies Strengthen Littoral Combat Ship Operations

Discover how Textron Systems‘ uncrewed technologies are expanding the capabilities of Littoral Combat Ships (LCS’) across Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), mine countermeasures, and multi-domain maritime operations.

The role of uncrewed systems in naval operations is growing rapidly, with modern conflicts demanding increased interoperability, situational awareness, and operational efficiency. Textron Systems explores how Aerosonde® Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS) and Common Unmanned Surface Vessel (CUSV®) are being deployed together aboard Independence-Class LCS’, enhancing their effectiveness across key mission areas.

The Aerosonde UAS, equipped with advanced sensors and long-endurance flight capabilities, provides real-time Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance from the air. It supports wide-area maritime surveillance, target detection, and tracking—critical functions for both offensive and defensive naval operations. Complementing this aerial perspective, the CUSV is a modular, autonomous surface platform capable of mine detection and clearance, underwater scanning, and support for anti-submarine missions.

By integrating both systems aboard the highly adaptable LCS platform, the Navy gains a multi-domain operational advantage, enabling simultaneous execution of multiple mission sets without additional crewed assets. This not only improves mission agility and decision-making but also enhances safety by reducing the need to place personnel in high-risk environments.

The article examines how the combined use of these uncrewed systems supports maritime domain awareness and extends the operational reach of LCSs in contested littoral zones. With over 40 payload options and modular integration, these technologies represent a significant evolution in naval force structure and mission execution.
