As drones gain recognition as vital instruments rather than mere recreational devices, Nokia is collaborating with Motorola Solutions to introduce a Drone as a First Responder initiative.
This initiative aims to bolster public safety by enhancing emergency response times and safeguarding frontline workers. Automated systems facilitate swift drone deployment, equipping responders with real-time situational insights prior to thier arrival at the scene.
Thomas Eder, Head of Embedded Wireless Solutions at Nokia, remarked, “In critical situations, every moment is crucial. This exemplifies how technology can support human efforts for the greater good. The innovation enables emergency services to function more effectively, providing improved service to the community while ensuring the safety of their personnel.”
Transforming Drone perception
Drones have been around since 1935,yet notable interest in this technology has surged only in the past twenty years. Initially designed for military use, they later gained popularity among hobbyists, leading engineers to explore their potential in commercial and industrial sectors.
A major hurdle in expanding drone applications is changing the perception that they are merely toys. Many decision-makers may associate drones with gifts or childhood memories, which can skew their understanding of the technology’s capabilities. However, businesses are increasingly leveraging drones for practical purposes, including worker safety, sustainability, and operational efficiency.
Eder noted, “The use of drones is becoming more prevalent in various industries, notably for companies with remote operations or those facing worker safety risks. If a human doesn’t need to be placed in a hazardous situation or travel long distances for brief inspections,why would you choose to do so?”
As an example,utilizing a drone equipped with a high-definition camera to inspect a telecommunications tower eliminates the need for a technician to climb,thereby reducing risk and creating a permanent digital record.
Moreover, drones contribute to sustainability by decreasing needless travel to remote sites. Beyond utilities,sectors such as oil and gas,construction,remote sensing,and mapping are discovering valuable applications for drone technology.
Adapting Drone Regulations
Regulatory advancements are further facilitating this transformation, particularly through modifications in beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations. BVLOS flights have been utilized in public services for years, and regulators are now exploring broader industrial applications.
In the UK, for example, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has implemented new regulations permitting drones to operate at low altitudes near infrastructure, enabling applications such as asset inspections and site security. Similar regulatory developments are occurring worldwide, paving the way for increased drone adoption.
Eder added, “This is a gradual process due to the complexities involved. Numerous factors are at play, and safety remains a primary concern in every discussion. However, the past few months have been incredibly promising, marking a pivotal moment for the drone industry.”
Initial trials of industrial drone applications have shown significant advantages. Industries such as oil and gas, mining, ports, and utilities, along with public safety organizations, are witnessing returns on investment within a year. Cost and time savings from remote inspections are key motivators, while new capabilities enabled by drone technology add further value.
Even though drones are still frequently enough viewed as toys, their role in business is rapidly expanding. As regulations continue to evolve,adoption is anticipated to accelerate,further establishing drones as indispensable tools for safety,security,and productivity.
