Nokia has entered into a groundbreaking agreement with Citymesh, a Belgian telecommunications provider, to deliver its innovative Nokia Drone Networks platform, which includes 70 Drone-in-a-Box (DiaB) units.
This deployment aims to establish a extensive 5G drone network across Belgium, enhancing the speed and efficiency of resource mobilization during emergencies.
Under the name SENSE by Citymesh, these 70 drones will be strategically positioned in 35 emergency zones nationwide, collecting vital data during the crucial first 15 minutes after an emergency call. This initiative ensures that first responders are well-informed and prepared to tackle each unique incident.
Belgium’s emergency services handle over two million calls annually, frequently enough dispatching police and fire units with incomplete information, which can hinder their response effectiveness. With the Nokia Drone Networks, operators can manage drone flights around the clock, launching them from strategically placed docking stations throughout the country.
These drones are equipped with high-definition cameras and AI-driven thermal imaging capabilities, allowing them to capture real-time aerial footage—such as smoke patterns, fire boundaries, and the number and location of individuals—and relay this information to control centers even before emergency teams arrive on the scene.Such aerial insights are crucial for formulating effective action plans that can save lives and minimize damage to property and the environment.

The nationwide rollout of SENSE follows successful pilot programs with the Fluvia fire brigade in Kortrijk, Brussels Airport Company, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, and the city of Genk, supported by the Federal Public Service Economy.
The Nokia Drone Networks solution integrates with both public and private 4G and 5G networks, enhancing situational awareness for first responders and other professionals. It can be operated remotely and adheres to aviation regulations set by bodies such as EASA in Europe and the FAA in the United States.
This platform features a dual gimbal camera, a docking station, edge data processing capabilities, and is supported by an open API framework that facilitates the integration of third-party applications, broadening its functionality for various use cases.
