Introduction of the New Ophir SWIR & NIR Lens

MKS Instruments, Inc. has unveiled the innovative Ophir SWIR & NIR 25-250mm continuous zoom lens at the SPIE Defense and Commercial Sensing 2023 event.

Key Features and Specifications

This lens is touted as the first compact and robust low Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) solution tailored for the latest 5μm and 10μm SXGA, along with the 15μm VGA SWIR detectors. MKS instruments emphasizes that this lens is approximately 60% lighter than comparable SWIR lenses, weighing in at just 860 grams and measuring 224mm in length. It also boasts a remarkable detection range that exceeds 26 kilometers, all while maintaining high image quality. Additionally, the lens is equipped with a specialized coating designed too endure extreme environmental conditions.

Applications and market Impact

The Ophir SWIR & NIR 25-250mm lens is engineered to considerably enhance the capabilities of advanced drones, coastal search and rescue operations, tactical UAV infrared cameras, and micro/mini tactical payloads across commercial, homeland security, and defense sectors.

Expert Insights

Dr. Kobi Lasri, General Manager of the Ophir Optics Group, stated, “The Ophir SWIR zoom lens sets a new standard for the industry’s latest small pixel detectors. Its impressive combination of extended wavelength capabilities, reduced SWaP, high reliability, and competitive pricing opens doors to new applications and significant advancements in long-range daytime observation, including laser spot detection in challenging visibility and environmental conditions.”

technical Performance

The Ophir SWIR & NIR 25-250mm lens is chromatically corrected to accommodate a wider shortwave infrared spectrum, ranging from 700nm to 1700nm, effectively covering both NIR and SWIR bands. It operates with minimal distortion and offers an optional configuration for a narrow wavelength range of 1100nm to 1700nm. The lens features a 10X zoom ratio, an effective focal length (EFL) range of 25-250mm, and an F/5.5 aperture suitable for both 5μm and 10μm pixel pitch detectors, including SXGA formats. Its low SWaP athermal design ensures high modulation transfer function (MTF) performance across the zoom range and a broad temperature spectrum.
