Hexagon | NovAtel has unveiled the latest edition of its reference guide, titled: *Understanding GNSS: A Thorough Guide to Global Navigation Satellite Systems for Positioning and Autonomy*.
Authored by leading professionals at Hexagon, this updated edition features comprehensive revisions on various GNSS constellations, including GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo. It also highlights recent technological advancements aimed at improving Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) precision, along with a new section dedicated to the expanding domain of automotive autonomy.
neil Gerein, Vice President of Marketing for Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division, stated, “This publication equips readers with essential insights into GNSS and its role in facilitating autonomy, showcasing practical applications in sectors such as transportation, agriculture, mining, marine, unmanned systems, defense, and surveying.” He added, “Since the launch of our first edition over ten years ago, we have aimed to create a valuable tool for both industry experts and students.”
With straightforward explanations and visual aids illustrating the utilization of GNSS signals for PNT, the necessary equipment, potential errors and correction methods, as well as threats and their countermeasures, this guide seeks to establish a robust understanding of GNSS principles.
Additionally, the book explores the integration of GNSS with other sensor technologies, including Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), LiDAR, radar, and camera systems, to facilitate autonomous operations.
The foreword for this edition was contributed by Dr. Robert Thirsk, a distinguished Canadian astronaut, physician, and engineer.
“Throughout my missions in space, I depended on positioning and automation technologies to fulfill my objectives,” remarked Dr. Thirsk. “GNSS is fundamental in addressing the questions of location and navigation, and this book illustrates how resolving these queries can contribute to a enduring future.”
