Northwest Florida Beaches international airport (ECP) has recently revealed a notable advancement in aviation safety. In collaboration with DeTect, a leader in aviation security solutions, the airport has successfully implemented a dual-purpose MERLIN aircraft Birdstrike Avoidance Radar alongside the DroneWatcher DSR, a refined Drone Detection and Defense system.

The DroneWatcher DSR enhances the airport’s security framework by adding a third layer of drone detection and defense. This system also serves as a bird radar, providing immediate alerts regarding the risk of bird strikes to the airport’s flight safety management team. Users at the airport receive real-time notifications about drone incursions and birdstrike risks through tailored web displays and automated text messages.

Previously, the initial phase of this project involved the installation of DroneWatcherRF sensors and app-enabled devices at the airport. The recent radar installation marks the completion of a extensive system designed to ensure real-time detection, tracking, and automated alerts concerning both bird and drone strike risks to aircraft.

“At ECP, our commitment to the safety and security of our passengers and staff is unwavering.DeTect’s innovative systems are instrumental in achieving this goal,” stated Parker W. McClellan Jr., the Executive Director of the airport. “We take pride in being the first to implement such advanced technology.”

With this new installation, ECP claims the title of the first commercial airport globally to deploy a dual detection radar system for both birds and drones. The data regarding bird activity and drone incursions, along with risk assessments, is made available to airport personnel through customized real-time web interfaces and automated text alerts.

The MERLIN system stands out as the only bird radar currently utilized by air traffic controllers to provide real-time birdstrike risk notifications to pilots. Coupled with the DroneWatcher module and RF sensors, the MERLIN system is capable of detecting, locating, and neutralizing drones and their operators, effectively addressing the growing concern of drone threats near airports.

Gary Andrews, President and CEO of DeTect, remarked, “ECP is among the pioneering airports in the United States to adopt a comprehensive drone detection system. We are thrilled that our technology contributes to making it one of the safest airports in the nation.”
