Introducing MKS Instruments’ latest Thermal Imaging Lenses
MKS Instruments, Inc. has unveiled the latest models in its LightIR series, featuring compact, high-performance motorized continuous zoom lenses designed for low Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) applications.
New Releases at SPIE Defense and Commercial Sensing 2023
at the recent SPIE Defense and Commercial Sensing 2023 event, MKS introduced the Ophir LightIR 10-135mm and 18-225mm MWIR f/3.6 thermal imaging lenses. Thes lightweight and compact lenses are specifically optimized for use with smaller VGA 10μm Focal Plane Array (FPA) infrared detectors.
compact Design and Enhanced Performance
The LightIR 10-135mm and 18-225mm lenses boast a streamlined design that minimizes the number of optical elements, resulting in a important reduction in both length and weight. The 10-135mm lens weighs just 250 grams, making it 20% lighter than comparable models and the smallest continuous zoom lens available today. The 18-225mm lens weighs 300 grams.
Exceptional Detection Capabilities
These innovative lenses offer remarkable detection ranges, exceeding 11 kilometers for the 10-135mm lens and 15 kilometers for the 18-225mm lens. They are tailored for the rigorous demands of SWaP and small gimbal thermal imaging applications, including drones, tactical UAV infrared cameras, and micro/mini-tactical payloads across commercial, homeland security, and defense sectors.
Market insights from MKS Leadership
Dr. Kobi Lasri, General Manager of Ophir Optics group, stated: “The introduction of the LightIR 10-135mm and 18-225mm f/3.6 zoom lenses reflects the industry’s shift towards smaller form factors. These lenses combine low-SWaP features with extended effective focal lengths, a detection range surpassing 15 kilometers, and competitive pricing for 10μm VGA IR sensors, making them ideal for advanced drone, UAV, and small gimbal thermal imaging applications.”
Advanced Optical Design for Harsh Environments
With a Narrow Field of View (NFOV) of 2.7° for the 10-135mm lens and 1.6° for the 18-225mm lens, the cutting-edge design of the Ophir LightIR lenses ensures near diffraction-limit performance even in challenging conditions. This design effectively addresses issues such as line-of-sight stabilization, athermalization, consistent focus across the zoom range, and superior imaging quality. Additionally, the mechanical and electrical interfaces facilitate seamless integration into various camera systems.
