Volatus Aerospace Secures Special Authorization for Heavy Drone Operations
Volatus Aerospace has been granted a unique authorization by Transport Canada, allowing the operation of heavy-duty crop-spraying drones exceeding 25kg across the nation.
Empowering Pilots with Advanced Training
this special permission enables pilots trained through Volatus Aerospace’s comprehensive program to operate in accordance with the stipulations set forth by Transport Canada, facilitating drone operations throughout Canada.
“Current regulations in Canada limit the operation of remotely piloted aircraft over 25kg within national airspace. This new approval allows us to utilize a heavy crop-spraying drone with a maximum take-off weight of 101kg,” explained Reno Matthews, Director of Regulatory compliance at Volatus Aerospace.“This progress enhances our capacity to provide compliant drone crop-spraying services for our precision agriculture clients across Canada.”
The Rise of Drone Technology in Agriculture
Globally, drone crop spraying is gaining traction as a sustainable and cost-effective solution for crop management, thanks to its precision targeting and superior spray control capabilities.
“Conventional methods, such as crop dusting with aircraft, are not only expensive but also lack precision, frequently enough treating healthy plants with needless chemicals alongside those that are diseased. Drones minimize product usage and can specifically target only the plants requiring treatment, making this approach more efficient, safer, and economically viable,” stated John Johnstone, Sales Director for Agriculture at Volatus Aerospace. “Consumers are increasingly demanding fewer chemicals on their food, and this method is more environmentally friendly—it represents the future of agriculture.”
Regulatory Landscape and Industry Support
While the approval for the dispersal of certain chemicals is still pending from Health Canada, many non-pesticide treatments are currently permitted. Additionally, major agricultural corporations, such as Bayer, are actively working to assist farmers in leveraging these innovative technologies.
