This article highlights the benefits of the HydroBoat 990, an Android-based Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) from SatLab Geosolutions, which streamlines the setup and bathymetric survey processes using a single controller.
When considering USVs for bathymetric applications, it’s essential to evaluate not only their dimensions and weight but also their autonomous navigation features, which substantially enhance the efficiency of survey operations.
Additionally, the various elements associated with a USV—such as sensors, interaction systems between the USV and land-based stations, and software capabilities—must be taken into account.
Portability and user-friendliness of this technology are crucial; minimizing the learning curve is a primary focus before introducing additional features tailored to diverse environments.
The HydroBoat 990, designed specifically for bathymetric surveys, emphasizes efficiency from setup to data acquisition. Every component has been fine-tuned to ensure a dependable system, excelling in both precision and vessel quality.
Simplified Workflow
Survey readiness is streamlined with the inclusion of an integrated echo sounder and GNSS receiver, requiring only a battery, SIM card, and three communication antennas for setup. To activate the vessel, simply press the power button, and it will automatically connect to the controller. Once placed in the water, all subsequent depth measurement operations are managed by the Android software SLHydro USV.
The user interface is intuitively designed with two main modules: survey interface and project settings. Manual input of IP, port, and baud rate is no longer necessary. In the main interface, selecting “Device Connection” at the bottom reveals the current connection status. After creating a project folder and inputting coordinates, users can choose “Survey” for mission planning and data collection.

Upon entering the surveying interface, Google Maps loads automatically, allowing for the instant generation of missions by selecting waypoints on the map. Adjustments to spacing and steering can be made in real-time until the course aligns correctly with the shoreline.
Mission Planning
Real-time echo data is continuously displayed, enabling easy quality assessment. In many aquatic environments, users can activate the auto mode for data tracking, eliminating the need for manual adjustments of power, gain, and threshold settings.

After completing fieldwork, data processing is essential. Our complimentary software, SLHydro Sounder, allows users to review, process, and sample the collected data.

Advanced Functionality
Integrated INS Module.
When the USV navigates under bridges where GNSS signals may be obstructed, the Inertial Navigation System (INS) maintains the vessel’s position and orientation, providing continuous location data.
Obstacle Detection.
Equipped with a Millimeter Wave Radar unit operating between 10GHz and 200GHz, the vessel can detect obstacles with high precision. This radar offers a narrow beam and superior angular resolution, enhancing distance measurement and object identification compared to Ultrasonic Radar. When activated, the USV can identify obstacles within a 5-30 meter range at a 90-degree horizontal and 14-degree vertical angle, ensuring hull safety.
Remote Control Flexibility.
Typically, the USV can operate effectively within a two-kilometer range using a wi-Fi bridge connection, which aligns with the maximum visual range for surveying. For extended distances, 4G mode can be utilized, allowing control from virtually unlimited distances, provided the local network conditions are adequate.
Data Redundancy.
Real-time data logging is facilitated through the software, ensuring that copies of the data are saved both in the controller and the HydroBoat 990’s onboard storage. This redundancy safeguards against data loss in case of unexpected issues.
Durable Power System.
The propeller, frequently enough vulnerable to entanglement with fishing lines or debris, is protected by a grass-proof net. In cases of stubborn entanglements, the propeller can be easily disassembled for cleaning or replacement.

Sturdy Hull Design.
To enhance durability, the vessel features reinforced bumper strips and a robust hull. Over 20 full-speed impact tests from various angles were conducted to ensure safety during operation. The double hull design guarantees that the boat remains buoyant even in extreme conditions.
These technological advancements have significantly boosted the productivity of surveyors while reducing overall costs. The HydroBoat 990 USV system stands out as a practical, reliable, and economical solution for bathymetric surveys, aligning with contemporary industry requirements.
