EMCORE Corporation Achieves non-ITAR Status for key Navigation Products

EMCORE Corporation has recently announced that the U.S. Department of State has confirmed that its dual-use SDI500/SDI505 Revision F Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) are exempt from the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Additionally, the company has established that its SDN500 Inertial Navigation System (INS) also falls outside the scope of ITAR. This notable classification is anticipated to substantially expand the market potential for EMCORE’s Quartz Micro-electromechanical Systems (QMEMs) IMU and INS offerings.

Impact of Commodity Jurisdiction determination

Following the Commodity Jurisdiction (CJ) assessment by the U.S. Department of State, EMCORE’s SDI500/SDI505 products have been classified under the Export management Regulations (EAR), which are overseen by the Department of Commerce (DOC). This classification generally leads to reduced export restrictions and requirements, thereby enhancing the global marketability of these IMUs to international clients.

Advanced Technology in IMUs

The SDI500/SDI505 MEMS imus provide performance levels that rival those of traditional,more expensive optical IMUs,all while being more compact,lightweight,and energy-efficient. Utilizing cutting-edge QMEMS technology,these units achieve Angle Random Walk (ARW) values of 0.02°/√hr and maintain a bias stability of 1°/hr. They are specifically engineered to meet the rigorous performance demands of advanced applications, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and autonomous robotic systems.

Introducing the SDN500: A Tactical-Grade INS

The SDN500 represents EMCORE’s pinnacle in QMEMS technology, featuring a tactical-grade GPS-aided INS. It integrates the latest quartz gyroscopes and accelerometers from the SDI500/SDI505 series with high-speed signal processing capabilities and a 48-channel Coarse/Acquisition code GPS receiver, creating a robust and tightly integrated navigation and guidance system.

Industry Recognition and future Prospects

David Hoyh,EMCORE’s Director of Sales & Marketing for navigation products,expressed gratitude towards the U.S. Department of State for their thorough evaluation of the commodity jurisdiction request. He stated, “The conclusion that our dual-use SDI500/SDI505 IMUs are not subject to ITAR, along with the determination of EAR status under the DOC, allows us to reach a broader customer base globally, enabling more users to access these vital, high-precision EMCORE products.”
