Revolutionary Zero-Emissions Drone Fueled by Cube Autopilot Technology

CubePilot and Doosan Mobility Innovation have released new concept artwork for a new zero-emissions UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) powered

CubePilot, in collaboration with Doosan Mobility Innovation, has unveiled innovative concept designs for a groundbreaking zero-emissions UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) that leverages the CubePilot ecosystem. This ecosystem is anchored by the Cube autopilot series, complemented by a range of accessories and carrier boards developed with input from both the drone community and industry experts.

In 2019, Doosan Mobility Innovation made important strides by successfully developing and commercializing fuel cells tailored for aerial applications, including hydrogen-powered drones. Building on this commitment to lasting technology, Doosan has enhanced its DS30W drone with the Cube Orange flight controller, powered by the DP30M2S—a fully zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell designed for extended endurance.

One of the primary hurdles in the drone sector is the limited flight duration associated with conventional batteries. Doosan Mobility Innovation addresses this challenge with a comprehensive solution that integrates hydrogen PEMFC (Proton-exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) technology, which offers up to four times the energy capacity of traditional batteries, enabling over two hours of autonomous flight for missions.

Hydrogen fuel cell operation

Functionality of a hydrogen fuel cell

In the operation of a hydrogen fuel cell, hydrogen molecules are split by a catalyst into protons and electrons, which then take distinct paths to the cathode. The electrons travel through an external circuit, generating an electric current, while the protons move through the electrolyte to the cathode, where they combine with oxygen and electrons to form water and heat.

As the urgency of climate change intensifies, the meaning of renewable energy and sustainability continues to rise. Hydrogen-powered drones, which emit only pure water, are entirely eco-friendly. Their applications extend to the inspection and management of renewable energy facilities, perhaps catalyzing growth across the renewable energy sector.

The integration of the Cube Orange autopilot in the hydrogen fuel cell-powered drone enhances operational efficiency, allowing pilots to accomplish more during each flight while broadening sensor compatibility.
