Introducing the ARV-i: A Revolutionary Underwater Observation Vehicle
Boxfish Research, hailing from New Zealand, in collaboration with Norwegian firm Transmark Subsea, has unveiled an innovative underwater observation vehicle known as the ARV-i.
Overview of the Autonomous Underwater Resident Vehicle
The Autonomous Underwater Resident Vehicle (ARV) is the result of a strategic partnership aimed at creating a state-of-the-art solution for the continuous monitoring of underwater assets. This versatile vehicle is designed for various offshore sectors, including renewable energy, oil and gas exploration, wind energy, and aquaculture.
Operational Versatility and Features
The ARV-i is engineered for operational adaptability, allowing for both fully autonomous navigation and manual piloting. When functioning as a resident vehicle, it can remain submerged for extended periods, thanks to a specialized subsea docking station that supports wireless battery recharging and data transfer from its missions. With pre-programmed routes and onboard intelligence, the ARV-i can autonomously navigate and monitor underwater environments.
Advanced Technology integration
Incorporating Transmark Subsea’s cutting-edge underwater power and interaction systems, the ARV-i also leverages the advanced capabilities of the Boxfish ROV platform.Weighing in at just 25 kg, this lightweight and compact vehicle is designed for operation in confined spaces, while its eight-thruster configuration ensures exceptional stability and maneuverability.
Unmatched Observation Capabilities
The ARV-i excels in delivering high-quality underwater observations, equipped with up to six machine vision cameras,a 4K navigation camera, and an extraordinary 17,000 lumens of lighting. High-speed optical and acoustic communication systems allow for remote operation, and a manual piloting mode is available for onshore personnel who need direct control, utilizing live video feeds or a digital twin of the environment. Furthermore, the vehicle can store 4K video footage, enabling 3D modeling capabilities.
Flexible Connectivity Options
While the ARV-i operates as an untethered solution, it can also be equipped with a fiber-optic connection for enhanced video quality. Utilizing a subsea tether Management System allows for uncompressed 4K video streaming and expedited data transfer, catering to the needs of various operational scenarios.
Launch and Industry Impact
This groundbreaking underwater vehicle was officially launched at Ocean Business 21, an ocean technology exhibition and training event that took place from October 12 to 14, 2021, at the National Oceanography Center in Southampton, UK. the ARV-i is poised to make significant contributions across multiple industries, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of underwater asset monitoring.
