Amprius Technologies Launches Cutting-Edge Lithium-Ion Battery for Aviation
amprius Technologies, Inc. has unveiled its innovative 450 Wh/kg SiCore™ lithium-ion battery, boasting an extraordinary energy density of 950 Wh/L,with mass production anticipated soon.
Revolutionary Energy Density
Utilizing amprius’ unique silicon anode technology, the sicore™ cell offers up to 80% more energy compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries that use graphite anodes. This notable increase in energy density results in longer flight durations, enhanced range, and superior overall performance, all while maintaining a lightweight and compact design.
Engineered for Extreme Conditions
Specifically designed to withstand harsh environments, the SiCore™ cell meets the rigorous demands of aviation and defense sectors. It performs reliably across a broad spectrum of temperatures and in mission-critical situations. This battery is particularly suited for High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS), Medium-Altitude Platform Stations (MAPS), and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), where energy density, weight, and endurance are crucial for mission success. By enabling longer ranges and increased payload capacities without additional weight, this technology contributes to lowering overall system costs, allowing operators to conduct extended missions with fewer compromises and less reliance on extra batteries or fuel.
Path to Commercial Deployment
The SiCore™ cell is currently undergoing evaluation, with plans for qualification alongside prominent aviation and defense clients gearing up for commercial use. To meet the anticipated demand, amprius has established a global network for contract manufacturing, equipped with gigawatt-hour-scale production capabilities, ensuring the delivery of these high-performance cells at competitive prices.
Certification and Future Prospects
Amprius expects to recieve UN38.3 certification, essential for the safe air transport of lithium-ion batteries, within this quarter. This certification will pave the way for volume shipments to commence shortly thereafter, facilitating broader commercial deployment on a global scale.
Dr. Kang Sun, CEO of Amprius Technologies, stated, “We previously showcased the potential of achieving 450 Wh/kg with our SiMaxx platform. What distinguishes the SiCore™ cell is its ability to deliver this level of remarkable performance in a cell chemistry and format that can be scaled using existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes and equipment. It is indeed production-ready,commercially available, and currently undergoing qualification by our clients.”
Expanding Horizons in Energy Storage
The launch of the 450 Wh/kg SiCore™ cell follows the earlier introduction of Amprius’ SiCore™ platform in January 2024, which marked the arrival of a new generation of silicon anode cells designed for both high energy and high power in a unified format. With the latest 450 Wh/kg cell now entering production, SiCore™ is set to cater to a diverse array of high-demand applications across electric aviation, defense, and mobility sectors.
