Understanding the Perception ROV Skid

The Perception Skid is a pre-assembled framework that houses all necessary sensors for conducting intricate dynamic laser modeling and underwater imaging. Each sensor is factory-calibrated and seamlessly integrated, allowing for quick attachment to any compatible ROV for swift deployment.

this skid features both underwater optical sensors and navigational instruments that are precisely aligned, eliminating the need for customers to conduct patch tests prior to their surveys.

Connecting to the sensors within the Skid is straightforward, requiring only a single power and dialog line to interface with the vehicle. Furthermore, the Skid is equipped with a “Quick Connect” mounting system, enabling tool-free attachment to the ROV, which streamlines field installation and facilitates the exchange of sensor packages for various survey tasks.

Technological Innovations

The Voyis Perception Skid boasts a robust optical survey sensor capable of 3D modeling and image mapping from compact ROV platforms. It is paired with precise subsea navigation sensors that ensure reliable data collection and vehicle positioning. The key technologies incorporated in the Perception skid include:

  • Voyis Insight Micro Laser Scanner & Stills camera: configured for seabed surveys, this device provides high-resolution data corrected in real-time for event identification and 3D asset reconstruction. It can also be oriented forward for modeling underwater assets or mounted laterally for larger structures.
  • Sonardyne SPRINT-Nav Mini Inertial Navigation: a comprehensive inertial navigation system that integrates an accelerometer/gyro with Doppler Velocity Logs (DVL) and a depth sensor, ensuring precise global positioning. While the navigation data enhances optical data, it also significantly improves ROV piloting and autonomy.

Advantages of the Perception ROV skid

This innovative solution from Voyis features a truly plug-and-play design. The skid incorporates foam buoyancy within its frame, ensuring it remains neutrally buoyant and balanced in both pitch and roll, which is crucial for maintaining vehicle control.

This design allows for immediate attachment to the ROV’s underside without affecting vehicle dynamics or trim, enabling the quick interchange of different payloads for various tasks.

The accompanying images illustrate the videoray Defender ROV equipped with the Perception Skid, showcasing the “quick connect” feature that allows for installation in under a minute.

Subsea connections from the Voyis Insight Micro and Sonardyne SPRINT-Nav Mini are easily linked to the Defender’s auxiliary sensor box, which transmits data over the vehicle’s central Ethernet network. This capability enables real-time data streaming to the surface during surveys.

The Perception ROV skid captures both underwater 3D laser data and colour imagery in real-time, utilizing the highly accurate SPRINT-Nav Mini INS (Inertial Navigation Systems) to generate high-resolution georeferenced data outputs.

The underwater 3D laser provides data for precise asset inspections, mine detection, marine environmental modeling, micro-bathymetry, and more. The color images are processed using machine learning to create true-color image maps, vividly representing underwater environments. These images can be directly utilized in standard photogrammetry software to produce stunning seabed maps or colorized 3D models of targets such as shipwrecks and coral reefs.
