Introducing the Next Generation of NDAA-Compliant Development Drones
ModalAI, Inc. has launched the latest iterations of its VOXL 2 development drones, the Starling 2 and Starling 2 Max, both of which adhere to NDAA regulations.
Lightweight and Versatile Designs
The Starling 2, the more compact model, weighs just 280 grams and is engineered for over 40 minutes of indoor visual navigation. In contrast, the Starling 2 Max, with a weight of 500 grams, is designed for robust outdoor use, offering more than 55 minutes of long-range dead reckoning capabilities and the ability to carry an impressive payload of up to 500 grams. Both drones can accommodate up to five image sensors, including the FLIR Lepton thermal sensor.
Enhanced Navigation and Compliance Features
These new models come equipped with advanced image sensor suites that ensure reliable navigation in both indoor and outdoor environments, boasting record-setting flight durations for VOXL 2 drones. Both models are crafted with SWAP (Size, Weight, and power) considerations and comply with the NDAA ‘20 section 848 Authorization Act.
Powerful Processing Capabilities
At the heart of the Starling drones is the VOXL 2, ModalAI’s sophisticated companion computer and autopilot system, designed to enhance the Blue UAS Framework 2.0 Programme. With an impressive 15 TOPS of AI processing power, the VOXL 2 is driven by the 8-core Qualcomm® QRB5165 processor. The drones are equipped with a PX4 real-time flight controller, multiple image sensors, TDK® IMUs, a barometer, GPS, and WiFi connectivity, all assembled in the USA.
Bright software Integration
The VOXL SDK empowers the Starling 2 and Starling 2 Max with advanced intelligence. It includes open-source autonomy algorithms for visual inertial odometry, obstacle avoidance, and 3D mapping and path planning, significantly reducing the time required to prepare for flight.
Additionally, the VOXL SDK incorporates pre-integrated TensorFlow Lite neural networks for object classification, detection, and other functionalities.Developers will find a thorough library of documentation, code samples, and tutorials to facilitate their development efforts.
Industry Impact and Future Prospects
“Our development drones are designed for rapid integration of the VOXL SDK, VOXL 2, and our suite of cutting-edge components, streamlining the path to market and enhancing R&D efforts. The Starling 2 and Starling 2 Max represent the next evolution of VOXL 2 drones, poised to elevate the industry with advanced US-built autonomous capabilities,” stated Chad Sweet, CEO and co-founder of ModalAI, Inc.
