EMSA Harnesses UAS Technology to Track Ship Emissions in the North Sea

Embarked on board the patrol vessel Bamberg, Schiebel’s CAMCOPTER S-100 is being used to monitor commercial ship emissions within the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)

Under a partnership with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), Schiebel is utilizing its CAMCOPTER S-100 Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) to monitor ship emissions for the German Federal police and the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency.

Deployed on the patrol vessel Bamberg, the S-100 operates around the clock to track emissions from commercial vessels within Germany’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the North Sea.

Tasked primarily with assessing sulphur emissions from ships navigating busy shipping routes, the S-100 ensures compliance with EU regulations regarding the sulphur content in marine fuels. The data collected is transmitted in real-time to the EMSA RPAS Data Center and subsequently relayed to the appropriate authorities.

Hans Georg Schiebel, Chairman of the schiebel Group, remarked: “by monitoring sulphur emissions and collecting data on vessels that fail to comply with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) environmental standards, we are considerably contributing to the preservation of our ecosystem. We take pride in the S-100 UAS being an essential tool in this mission.”

Along with its primary function, the CAMCOPTER S-100 UAS will assist in various maritime surveillance operations, including monitoring vessel traffic, enforcing maritime laws within German waters, protecting the surroundings, and providing support for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations when necessary.
