Introducing the Cutting-Edge Tactical-Grade Nine Degree-of-Freedom MEMS IMU!

Silicon Sensing Systems has launched a new ITAR-free all-silicon MEMS IMU (inertial measurement unit) that features nine degrees of freedom

Silicon Sensing Systems has introduced an innovative ITAR-free all-silicon MEMS IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) that boasts nine degrees of freedom and a notably minimized SWaP (Size, Weight, and Power) profile. The DMU41 measures 50x50x50 mm and weighs a mere 200g, with power consumption reduced by 50% compared to its predecessor.

The DMU41 delivers highly accurate motion sensing capabilities for compact and constrained UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), drones, and robotic systems, offering performance that rivals larger, heavier, and more expensive fiber optic gyro (FOG)-based alternatives.

This new IMU integrates outstanding angle random walk and bias stability with remarkable low noise performance. Each unit is equipped with three inductive and three piezoelectric resonating ring gyroscopes, alongside six capacitive accelerometers, all engineered and produced by Silicon Sensing, along with three magnetometers.

The inertial sensor data from the DMU41 is fused to provide optimal motion sensing insights, with adjustable output rates reaching up to 2kHz. Outputs can include angular rate, acceleration, delta angle, delta velocity, temperature, and built-in test results. Each unit undergoes calibration across the entire operational temperature range to ensure consistent and reliable performance.

Steve Capers, General Manager of Silicon Sensing Systems, stated, “The progress of the DMU41 involved close collaboration with clients from various industries, many of whom highlighted the necessity for a compact, ‘tactical grade’ IMU that is not subject to ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) restrictions.”

“we anticipate that our new IMU will excel in the most challenging environments—such as aerospace, marine, and space—were precise motion sensing is essential, yet space and power resources are limited.”
