Introducing Iridium Certus 200: A Game-Changer in Connectivity

iridium communications Inc. has officially launched its Iridium Certus 200 service, catering too maritime, land mobile, and government sectors. This innovative service promises outstanding performance and value, especially for maritime and land-based applications, with aviation solutions expected to roll out by late 2021.

Advanced Connectivity Solutions

Iridium certus represents a cutting-edge L-band broadband solution that allows users to adjust device speeds, sizes, and power requirements according to their specific needs. This adaptability is made possible by the enhanced Iridium satellite constellation, which not only provides connectivity but also serves as a platform for partners to create specialized broadband, midband, and narrowband applications through Iridium’s interconnected L-band network.

Unmatched Performance and Accessibility

With uncompressed transmission speeds reaching up to 176 Kbps, Iridium Certus 200 supports up to three high-quality voice lines via a compact, lightweight, and cost-effective antenna. This is a significant advantage over competing L-band broadband services that typically require bulky antenna domes. Iridium Certus 200 is designed to deliver reliable service to customers globally at a competitive price.

Initial Offerings and Future Developments

The first products available under the Iridium Certus 200 service include the Thales VesseLINK 200 for maritime use and the Thales MissionLINK 200 for land applications. Additionally, the Lars Thrane LT-4200 maritime terminal is set to launch in early 2022, along with various aviation terminals targeting late 2021 and early 2022.

Applications in the Maritime Sector

Iridium Certus 200 is tailored for a wide range of maritime applications, including leisure yachts, fishing boats, autonomous vessels, and various workboats such as tugboats and ferries. The service effectively supports numerous connected ship applications, including vessel monitoring systems, internet of Things (IoT) functionalities, and sensor data transmission. It also facilitates essential ship business applications like web browsing, email, and voice communication. Designed for primary vessel communication needs, it can complement VSAT solutions and is poised for future GMDSS service capabilities. The compact, lightweight equipment features no moving parts, ensuring straightforward installation, minimal maintenance, and high reliability, making it an economical choice for mariners.

Land Mobile Market Capabilities

In the land mobile sector, Iridium Certus 200 is versatile enough to support both mobile and fixed-site applications. It is ideal for business continuity, public safety, utility management, and global governmental operations. the service is particularly beneficial for managing field workforces, controlling remote assets requiring IP connectivity, and providing voice communications. It also serves as a backup for VSAT systems, ensuring reliable out-of-band management and connectivity.

User-Friendly Interface

The Thales MissionLINK 200 features an intuitive interface that can be operated via smartphone or tablet, enabling critical applications that can seamlessly switch between primary VSAT or cellular networks and Iridium satellite service as needed, thanks to its built-in network routing capabilities.

Aviation Solutions on the Horizon

Scheduled for introduction in late 2021 and early 2022, Iridium Certus 200 aviation terminals will cater to business, commercial, government, and general aviation aircraft, including rotorcraft. These terminals will feature low-profile, highly reliable L-band antennas and lightweight designs, facilitating high-quality voice, IP data, email, and web browsing capabilities.

Commitment to Safety and Reliability

Certification for aviation safety services related to Iridium Certus is currently underway, with updates expected in the near future.

“Iridium Certus is a robust connectivity platform that empowers our partners to create specialized terminals, enhancing capabilities across various industries,” states Bryan Hartin, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Iridium. “Iridium Certus 200 fills a crucial gap in our broadband offerings, providing a more affordable product and service class with dependable connectivity that will reach more markets.”
