Innovative Autonomous EOD Maritime Response Vehicle Unveiled

Greensea IQ has achieved a significant milestone by successfully demonstrating a prototype of the Autonomous EOD Maritime Response Vehicle (AEMRV) for the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and the United States Navy.

Advanced Technology Integration

This innovative system leverages the capabilities of OPENSEA Edge, which provides essential computing power for edge perception systems and sophisticated autonomous functionalities within the EOD Workspace. This allows for a human-in-the-loop approach to autonomy and enables remote command and control of the ROV platform without physical connections.

Demonstration Overview

The demonstration occurred over several days in September, off the coast of San Diego, showcasing a fully integrated, untethered ROV powered by OPENSEA Edge. The vehicle used was a modified VideoRay MSS Defender, enhanced by Greensea IQ to include additional batteries and an acoustic modem.

Real-World Applications

During the event, the vehicle autonomously executed tasks, effectively searching for potential threats in the habitat using acoustic dialog methods. This demonstration underscored the capabilities of the EOD Workspace, Greensea IQ’s versatile software platform designed for Mine Countermeasure (MCM) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) missions.

Showcasing Communication Innovations

The event also highlighted safe C2, Greensea IQ’s communication framework that facilitates long-range command and control of autonomous marine robots, seamlessly integrated within the OPENSEA Edge system.

Insights from Leadership

Ben Kinnaman, CEO of Greensea IQ, expressed his views on the technology, stating, “The advancement of autonomous intervention technology is crucial for enhancing our operational endurance in marine environments, making our missions safer and more efficient. The demonstration to the US Navy and DIU exemplifies this technology in action. This software suite will significantly improve the safety and scalability of neutralizing underwater threats using marine robots.”

Kinnaman further remarked, “Collaborating with the Defense Innovation Unit has been an incredible experience. DIU has been proactive in seeking urgent solutions for underwater threat management. This initiative has merged rigorous engineering with the potential of emerging technologies, combining elements of contracting and venture funding to rapidly develop a prototype.”

Future Prospects

As 2021, Greensea IQ has been under contract with the DIU to create a fully autonomous and untethered software platform for ROVs utilized in MCM and EOD operations. This demonstration marked the culmination of their successful prototype, which will now undergo further evaluation by the US Navy.
