Triad RF Systems has published a extensive test report that evaluates the capabilities of its THPR1006 high-power S-band radio system in comparison to the Microhard pMDDL2450 PicoRadio. The pMDDL2450 serves as the foundational component of the THPR1006, which is enhanced with additional high-power RF subsystems to significantly extend the reliable communication range, making it ideal for long-range UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) ISR (intelligence, surveillance, adn reconnaissance) operations.

Understanding the Performance of PicoRadio

Radios like the pMDDL2450 PicoRadio can effectively deliver satisfactory throughput over short distances (less than 10 km) with a standard output power of 1 Watt per channel. However, when it comes to longer distances or higher throughput requirements, it may be necessary to boost the RF power of the link. A typical solution involves integrating a bi-directional amplifier (BDA) with each output port of the radio and its corresponding antenna.

Challenges with Standalone Systems

While adding a BDA to an existing radio setup can enhance performance, it may also introduce new variables that could lead to stability or performance challenges. In contrast, the Triad THPR1006 is designed as an integrated system that mitigates these issues, allowing for seamless integration into current ISR platforms.
