BAE and QinetiQ Join Forces to Revolutionize Autonomous UAS Technology

A framework agreement signed by the two companies will explore the potential to collaborate and develop a family of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and associated mission management systems

Strategic partnership Between BAE Systems adn QinetiQ in Autonomous Air Systems

BAE Systems and QinetiQ have entered into a strategic framework agreement aimed at advancing the development of autonomous uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) and mission management technologies.

Collaborative Development of UAS

This partnership will focus on creating a suite of UAS and their corresponding mission management systems, designed to ensure seamless interoperability with both current and future crewed and uncrewed platforms. The goal is to enhance operational effectiveness and consolidate combat air capabilities.

innovative Mission Management Solutions

The autonomous mission management system will empower operators to effectively coordinate a combination of crewed and uncrewed assets on the battlefield, all under the guidance of a human decision-maker.

Initial Collaboration Phase

In the initial phase of this collaboration, the teams will investigate the integration of BAE Systems’ autonomous mission management system with uncrewed platforms developed by both organizations. This integration aims to facilitate cooperation between these platforms and existing as well as future crewed and uncrewed combat aircraft.

Expert Insights

Dave Holmes, Managing Director of FalconWorks, BAE Systems’ advanced research and technology division, stated, “The UK and other nations are eager to deploy high-performance uncrewed air systems that can deliver military capabilities across diverse operational scenarios. Our partnership with QinetiQ is a significant step toward providing this capability to our clients.”

Mick Andrae, Global Campaign Director for Robotics & Autonomous Systems at QinetiQ, emphasized, “Our clients increasingly require enhanced combat capabilities, improved safety, and cost reductions. Collaborating with BAE Systems allows us to conduct mission-critical operations without the customary financial burdens. This partnership will enhance our clients’ intelligence, protection, and overall capability to counter threats and safeguard national interests.”

Framework Agreement Details

Formalized at the DSEI event in London, the framework agreement stipulates that both companies will continue to develop their respective UAS in alignment with a unified product strategy, facilitating effective collaboration on the development of both current and future crewed and uncrewed platform concepts.

Regulatory Collaboration

As part of this agreement, BAE Systems and QinetiQ will work closely with relevant regulatory authorities to establish the necessary clearance processes for autonomous systems.

Showcasing Innovations

Attendees at DSEI can view the innovative concepts from both BAE Systems and QinetiQ at the BAE Systems booth, H3-110.
