Schiebel Partners with OPTIMAS to Revolutionize Optical Laser Communication
The OPTIMAS initiative in Europe has officially joined forces with Schiebel to create a cutting-edge free-space optical communication system tailored for multi-domain defense applications.
Objectives of the OPTIMAS Project
OPTIMAS is set to provide rapid and secure data transmission capabilities, emphasizing a high level of security through the integration of state-of-the-art encryption methods, including quantum key distribution (QKD).
Technological Integration with Schiebel’s CAMCOPTER® S-100
Schiebel’s CAMCOPTER® S-100, a specialized Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), will incorporate advanced optical laser communication technology as part of this project. This integration will facilitate communication between aerial units and satellites.
Transforming Airborne Laser Communication Systems
Designed for a variety of applications, including satellite constellations, aerial (drone), naval, and terrestrial operations, OPTIMAS is poised to revolutionize airborne laser communication systems. This advancement will enable secure, high-speed communications, marking a meaningful leap forward in the field.
Demonstration and Future Applications
The project’s concluding demonstration will aim to establish secure, high-speed, bidirectional optical communications. this will enhance satellite pointing, acquisition, and tracking capabilities in Low Earth Orbits (LEO), while also exploring applications in Medium Earth Orbits (MEO) and Geostationary Orbits (GEO), thereby broadening the systemS potential.
Collaborative efforts and International Support
The consortium comprises 12 companies from seven different nations, with a notable contribution from Spain, which includes six Spanish organizations. The project is coordinated by monodon, a subsidiary of Navantia, underscoring Spain’s pivotal role in advancing defense and communication technologies.
Backing from the European Defence Fund
The European Defence Fund (EDF) 2023 work program is backing this initiative, promoting international collaboration in technological innovation for defense purposes.
Conclusion: A Step Forward in Multi-Domain Defense
The OPTIMAS project not only enhances Schiebel’s technological capabilities in multi-domain defense but also strengthens European cooperation in the progress of cyber-secure laser communication systems.
