Introducing Ophir’s Advanced continuous Zoom Lenses for MWIR Applications

Ophir Optronics has unveiled the LightIR f/3.6 series of high-performance continuous zoom lenses, specifically designed for MWIR 640×512 VGA 10µm detectors. These lenses are particularly suited for low-SWaP thermal imaging tasks, including tactical UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) gimbals and payloads.

LightIR f3.6 MWIR continuous zoom lensThe newly launched series comprises three models, offering focal lengths of 10-135 mm, 16-180 mm, and 18-225 mm. Notably, the 16-180 mm variant employs a folded optics design, wich substantially reduces the size of the integrated optical system. This innovative approach allows for longer optical lengths while minimizing sensitivity to tolerances in compact setups.

Extraordinary Performance and Integration Features

Each lens in the series boasts remarkable MTF performance, ensuring consistent focus across the entire zoom range. They are designed for seamless integration with various camera systems and come equipped with Ophir’s cutting-edge zoom controller, which includes:

  • Continuous zoom capability with focus retention
  • Automatic focus adjustment across temperature and zoom variations
  • Mode for focusing on nearby objects
  • Focus blurring feature for NUC calculations
  • Comprehensive manual and automatic control of zoom and focus settings

Comprehensive Control and Calibration

A robust dialog protocol governs the full functionality of these lenses, providing detailed status updates, including motor positions, field of view (FOV), temperature readings, built-in test status, and operational hours. Both the controller and communication protocols are fully compatible with all Ophir zoom lenses.

For optimal performance and calibration, the lenses are utilized with Ophir’s standard OphirSim software, which offers:

  • Testing and evaluation of lens operations
  • Protocol simulation capabilities
  • Customer-specific lens calibration
  • Autofocus calibration features
