Introducing EMCORE’s Cutting-Edge Fiber Optic Gyroscope Modules
EMCORE Corporation has unveiled an innovative lineup of precision, single-axis fiber Optic Gyroscope (FOG) modules, namely the EMCORE-Hawkeye™ EG-120 and EG-200. These models promise to set a new standard in Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) metrics, outperforming existing alternatives in the market.
Compact and Cost-Effective Design
The EMCORE-Hawkeye™ EG-120 FOG module stands out as an ultra-compact and advanced solution, recognized as the smallest and moast budget-amiable closed-loop FOG currently available. Weighing approximately half as much and consuming one-third of the power compared to the latest generation of FOGs, it is also 35% smaller than EMCORE’s previous EMP series models.
Advanced Technology for Enhanced Performance
Equipped with next-generation field programmable Gate Array (FPGA) electronics, the EMCORE-Hawkeye™ EG-120 ensures superior performance and reliability at a competitive price point. The EG-200 model shares these cutting-edge electronics but offers even higher performance capabilities, surpassing both the EG-120 and the EMP series.
Versatile Applications Across Industries
The EMCORE-Hawkeye™ series is designed with specifications that cater to medium-accuracy platform stabilization needs, making it ideal for applications such as aerial camera systems, unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and gun stabilization technologies. Additionally, these models support a diverse range of guidance, navigation, and aeronautics applications. The distinct features of these new models provide customers with the adaptability to select the performance level and form factor that best aligns with their specific requirements. This launch marks just the beginning, as the EMCORE-Hawkeye™ FOG platform is set to expand its performance capabilities in the future.
Meeting Market Demands
“We identified a meaningful demand for a more compact and cost-efficient FOG solution than what is currently on the market,” stated David faulkner, EMCORE’s Vice President and General Manager of aerospace & Defense. “Our new EMCORE-Hawkeye series not only delivers exceptional performance but can also be tailored to meet the unique needs of our customers. We are excited to have received initial orders from key clients for integration into their systems,” he added.
In-House Progress for Custom Solutions
“EMCORE now manufactures all essential FOG components in-house, including the next-generation solid-state optical transceiver, lithium-niobate modulator, and FPGA electronics,” noted Dr. KK Wong, Senior Director of Fiber Optic Gyro Products at EMCORE. “This vertical integration allows us to customize performance parameters to meet specific customer needs while maintaining price points comparable to, or even lower than, those of less efficient open-loop designs.”
Precision and Accuracy Metrics
The EMCORE EG-120 boasts a typical in-run bias drift ranging from 1-10 degrees per hour, with an Angle Random Walk (ARW) between 0.1 to 1 degree per square root hour. In contrast, the EG-200 achieves a bias drift of less than 0.1 degrees per hour, with an ARW of 0.01 degrees per square root hour. Bias drift is a critical indicator of a FOG’s accuracy and precision, with lower drift models providing superior overall performance. The new EG-120 and EG-200 modules leverage advanced integrated optics and FPGA technology to deliver enhanced accuracy, reduced noise, improved drift stability, and superior linearity compared to competing products.
