Innovative Collaborations in Combat Air Technology

BAE Systems’ FalconWorks division has partnered with Hybrid Air Vehicles, a pioneer in enduring aviation technology, to explore advanced interaction and intelligence-gathering methods.

Strategic Partnerships for Autonomous Systems

During the DSEI event, FalconWorks also unveiled a new collaborative framework with QinetiQ, aimed at developing autonomous Uncrewed Air Systems (UAS) alongside mission management systems.

Additionally, UAVTEK Limited, a UK-based manufacturer specializing in small UAS, has joined forces with FalconWorks through a Memorandum of Collaboration to enhance thier complementary UAS technologies.

Milestones in Stratospheric Flight

This week marked a significant achievement for FalconWorks with the successful stratospheric flight of the PHASA-35, BAE Systems’ High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS) UAS. This accomplishment has deepened the company’s understanding of the scientific and climatic factors necessary for sustainable stratospheric operations.

Focus on Advanced Research and growth

Established in July, FalconWorks is a newly formed unit within BAE Systems’ Air Sector, dedicated to agile research and development of next-generation combat air capabilities. This initiative responds to the rapid technological advancements and evolving threats faced by military clients globally.

The division supports key programs such as Typhoon and Tempest while collaborating with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and academic institutions to rapidly conceptualize new products and services essential for maintaining air force superiority.

Vision for the Future of Defense Technology

Dave Holmes, Managing Director of FalconWorks, emphasized the unpredictable nature of modern defense, stating, “As we navigate an ever-changing landscape, the establishment of FalconWorks signifies our commitment to embedding innovative technology development at the heart of our operations. This new division leverages our extensive experience in leading combat air programs like Typhoon, F-35, and Tempest to explore new opportunities and deliver groundbreaking technologies that keep our clients ahead.”

Exploring New Frontiers in UAS Development

The collaboration with QinetiQ aims to develop a family of UAS managed by a common goal-based autonomous mission management system created by FalconWorks. This system will be designed to work seamlessly with both current and future crewed and uncrewed platforms, enhancing military operational capabilities and consolidating combat air power.

Potential of Ultra-Low emissions Aircraft

Through the MoU with Hybrid Air Vehicles,FalconWorks will investigate the defense and security applications of the airlander,an ultra-low emissions aircraft capable of operating from various flat surfaces and remaining airborne for up to five days while carrying up to ten tonnes of advanced computing,communication,surveillance,and reconnaissance equipment.

Maximizing Micro UAS Capabilities

BAE Systems’ partnership with UAVTEK will focus on optimizing their combined strengths in the micro UAS sector, notably concerning the nano Bug UAS, and exploring the potential defense and security applications of this innovative technology.
