Strengthening Maritime Security: Greensea IQ and Ocean Power Technologies Extend Partnership
In a recent development, Greensea IQ and the leader in renewable ocean energy, Ocean Power Technologies (OPT), have renewed their collaboration through a significant contract extension.
A Partnership Built on Innovation
This contract extension, which will last until May 2025, highlights the enduring nature of their alliance, which commenced in 2021. It reflects a commitment to advancing maritime technologies and solutions that benefit both organizations.
Advancing Maritime Domain Awareness Solutions
Utilizing its adaptable open architecture platform, OPENSEA, Greensea IQ will continue to partner with OPT to enhance the Maritime Domain awareness Solution (MDAS). OPT is well-known for its innovative PowerBuoy products, which are equipped with over-the-horizon (OTH) MDAS capabilities. These PowerBuoys harness renewable energy from solar, wind, and wave sources, making them a sustainable solution for marine monitoring.
Applications of the Maritime Domain Awareness Solution
The MDAS integrated with OPT PowerBuoys is designed to monitor marine protected areas, combat illegal fishing, provide automated vessel traffic data for ports, and support extensive offshore monitoring for defense and security purposes.
Collaborative Development Efforts
Under the new contract, Greensea IQ will play a crucial role in the evolution of OPT’s MDAS by contributing advanced technologies such as OPENSEA and Safe C2. The collaboration will encompass all facets of system and software design, including command and control, communication, and data transfer, as well as the integration of OPT’s unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) into the overall system architecture.
Adapting Technologies for Broader Applications
Originally designed for specific defense applications, the dual-purpose technologies OPENSEA and Safe C2 are being adapted to align with OPT’s maritime security and awareness goals. This adaptation aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of both ocean energy and defense solutions.
Enhancing Data Integration and Communication
This partnership will also focus on integrating sensory data, optimizing user interfaces, ensuring secure cloud data transfer, and incorporating edge computing and storage solutions. These advancements will facilitate seamless communication and robust command and control capabilities.
Leadership Insights
Ben Kinnaman, CEO of Greensea IQ, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to deepen our collaboration with Ocean Power Technologies and contribute to the advancement of the maritime Domain Awareness Solution. Our technologies, OPENSEA and Safe C2, are ideally suited to support OPT’s vision.”
Kinnaman further noted, “The integration of our technologies will be straightforward, as we already possess the essential components like user interface, command and control, communication, and sensor integration. The primary addition will be the cloud data transfer.”
James Clark, Principal Architect for Mission Systems at OPT, acknowledged Greensea IQ’s contributions, stating, “Greensea IQ has been vital to the development of the OPT MDAS platform from the outset, and we are excited to extend our partnership for this next critical phase of MDAS evolution.”
