Transforming Advanced Air Mobility with Transwing® VTOL Aircraft

PteroDynamics outlines how the company is reshaping advanced air mobility with its innovative Transwing® VTOL aircraft, offering unique capabilities for commercial and defense missions

Transforming Advanced Air Mobility with Transwing VTOL Aircraft

The advanced air mobility sector is poised for rapid growth, with technological innovations and progress in government certifications paving the way for groundbreaking aircraft designs to make a significant impact.

Autonomous vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are at the forefront of this evolution. PteroDynamics is striving to create the most effective VTOL aircraft for each specific application with its distinctive Transwing® platform.

The Transwing features wings that fold to seamlessly transition between vertical and horizontal flight modes. This unique capability provides advantages over other VTOL designs, addressing many of the fastest-expanding mission requirements.

In horizontal flight, it resembles a traditional fixed-wing aircraft. Only when the wings begin folding in preparation for landing does its VTOL capability become apparent—something not true of other VTOL designs.

The Transwing’s aerodynamic efficiency and energy optimization make it adaptable to various mission demands. Its straightforward design enhances reliability and simplifies operation compared to more complex VTOL UAS.

The positive feedback from the U.S. Navy during real-world sea trials at this year’s RIMPAC exercise, along with newly announced international distribution and strategic agreements with Overwatch Group in the United Kingdom, Cornes Technologies in Japan, and Babcock in Australia, highlights growing global interest.

Protecting a Proprietary Platform

Unlike tilt-wing, tilt-propulsor, tail-sitter, or lift-plus-cruise designs—none of which are proprietary—the Transwing platform is protected by exclusive intellectual property.

Securing the value of the Transwing’s design and its advanced flight control technologies is a cornerstone of PteroDynamics’ corporate strategy and essential for creating value for shareholders. Its distinctive airframe supports multiple patent opportunities unavailable to competitors.

PteroDynamics has established a robust portfolio of intellectual property across 11 territories, comprising six granted patents and 14 pending. The first U.S. patent, awarded in 2019, offers broad protection for the Transwing design with 25 apparatus claims and five method claims. Additional patents include two more in the U.S., two in Japan, and one in China.

Creating, Protecting, and Sustaining value

Innovation and collaboration are integral to PteroDynamics’ approach. As a smaller organization, the company has rapidly achieved success by partnering closely with technology and manufacturing experts critical to the development of the Transwing UAS platform.

The company also adopts a cooperative model when licensing the Transwing to potential partners. Ensuring that the Transwing’s intellectual property is properly protected is not only crucial for PteroDynamics but also essential for its partners, who rely on this protection to maintain their value.

The aircraft itself remains the central focus. The Transwing is the foundation of the company’s success. Meeting customer requirements necessitates close collaboration and iterative design, build, test, and flight processes. This cycle ensures continuous refinement, resulting in an aircraft capable of accomplishing missions with greater efficiency and effectiveness than competing designs.

The Transwing provides exceptional value to commercial and defense operators, offering capabilities other VTOL UAS cannot. By safeguarding its intellectual property, PteroDynamics aims to ensure this value is preserved for its customers, partners, and shareholders.
