Innovative developer of smart control systems for unmanned marine vessels, Dynautics, has published a case study showcasing the integration of the SPECTRE MK4 vessel control system (VCS) into ALTI’s latest uncrewed surface vessel (USV).
Company Overview
ALTI stands at the forefront of VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft technology, catering to both civilian and military markets with UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) designed for a variety of commercial and industrial uses.
With a decade of expertise in the design, manufacturing, and supply of unmanned aircraft systems for challenging global operations, ALTI sought to leverage its extensive knowledge in the realm of marine uncrewed surface vessels (USVs).
Identifying Challenges
ALTI’s engineering team is adept at crafting tailored solutions for various components, including payloads, propulsion, and communication systems for their UAVs. They quickly identified a fast patrol vessel suitable for remote operation customization.
The team required a control system capable of seamlessly integrating with essential third-party equipment, such as engine controls and steering mechanisms, while also utilizing their existing communication framework.
Additionally, ALTI aimed for a swift market entry, making a pre-existing control system that had demonstrated compatibility with the vessel’s Mercury Marine outboard motors especially appealing.
Strategic Approach
Mercury Marine’s DTS (Digital Throttle and Shift) enhances vessel efficiency by ensuring smooth gear engagement. To achieve their operational objectives, ALTI needed a partner with established expertise in Mercury Marine’s digital systems.
Dynautics had previously executed multiple conversions of crewed vessels to uncrewed ones utilizing Mercury Marine outboard engines. This experiance provided a reliable solution that could be integrated into ALTI’s communication systems without necessitating modifications.
As an authorized Mercury Marine dealer, dynautics’ technical team had access to the G3 engine setup software, which is crucial for calibrating and optimizing engine performance.
Implemented Solution
Dynautics supplied the SPECTRE MK4 vessel control system (VCS), complete with wiring harnesses, interfaces, and all essential components for installation. This plug-and-play solution integrated seamlessly with ALTI’s existing communication system, providing a clear pathway for development and deployment.
The commissioning process was conducted via a Zoom meeting, during which minor setup challenges were addressed. Both teams benefited from the synergy between their respective expertise in aerial and marine technologies.
Despite initial delays due to COVID-19, ALTI’s uncrewed patrol vessel successfully completed sea trials in an impressively short development timeframe.
Carl Reynaud, project Manager at Dynautics, stated, “We understand that our clients require dependable solutions delivered promptly, and the SPECTRE MK4 System provided to ALTI met their needs. This system enabled a rapid market entry, allowing them to achieve their mission.”
“Transforming existing hulls and propulsion systems for uncrewed applications is relatively straightforward. ALTI showcased the necessary skills for an efficient conversion, and the collaboration between our technical teams illustrates the alignment of AUV and UUV technologies. We anticipate further partnerships.”
Reflecting on the project, Callan Daniel, R&D Engineer at ALTI, remarked, “Recognizing the demand for a small to medium-sized optionally-manned multirole vessel across various sectors, our development team began exploring multiple solutions. We also initiated the creation of our proprietary system, including boards and modules to manage the complex electronic and hydraulic systems onboard.”
“After thorough research and development, we discovered Dynautics. Following an initial call to discuss our technical needs, it became evident that adopting the Dynautics system would substantially reduce development costs and expedite our time to market compared to other options. Dynautics customized a SPECTRE MK4 system for our vessel, allowing for easy and efficient integration with our current electronics and hydraulic systems. Choosing Dynautics enabled us to accelerate our development phase considerably.”
