uAvionix has successfully delivered its surface situational awareness systems at two major US airports, marking a step forward in airspace safety from the airport surface to the stratosphere


Collaboration Enhances Airport Situational Awareness Systems

Advancements in Airport Safety: New Situational Awareness Systems

uAvionix has achieved a meaningful milestone by obtaining approval for its surface situational awareness systems designed for both manned and unmanned aircraft at two prominent U.S. airports: Indianapolis International Airport (IND) and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS).

Operational Launch and Collaboration

the accomplished completion of the Service Acceptance Test (SAT) by uAvionix, in partnership with Capital Sciences, paves the way for Air Traffic Control (ATC) at these airports to commence operational use of the systems starting June 30, 2024.

In a remarkable 90-day period, the FlightLine systems were delivered and accepted at IND and AUS, thanks to effective collaboration with the FAA, the National Air Traffic Control Association (NATCA), and the respective airport authorities.

Innovative Technology Implementation

Both airports have also integrated uAvionix’s VTU-20 ADS-B Vehicle Movement Area Transmitters (VMATs) into their operations. This FAA-approved technology enables vehicles operating on runways and taxiways to be electronically detected by control towers and aircraft equipped with ADS-B In systems, significantly lowering the chances of runway incursions.

Importance of the Approvals

These approvals represent a crucial advancement for the FAA and align with uAvionix’s goal of improving airspace safety from the ground level to the upper atmosphere. Building on the success at IND and AUS,uAvionix plans to collaborate with the FAA to extend these capabilities to additional airports across the country.

“The uAvionix systems utilize the innovative Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) service known as FlightLine, which provides air traffic controllers with real-time, accurate representations of aircraft and vehicles on the airport surface, thereby enhancing situational awareness and mitigating the risk of runway incursions.”
