Amprius Technologies Powers BAE Systems’ Stratospheric Drone Flight
Amprius Technologies, Inc. has revealed that its advanced high-density batteries were crucial in enabling BAE Systems to achieve a landmark stratospheric flight trial.
PHASA-35: A New Era in High-Altitude Flight
The PHASA-35, developed by BAE Systems’ subsidiary Prismatic Ltd.,is a High-Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS) Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS) designed to operate above typical weather patterns and conventional air traffic.
Prosperous Test Flight Achieves New Heights
In a recent test conducted in new Mexico, the PHASA-35 ascended to over 66,000 feet, successfully entering the stratosphere before making a safe landing. This trial, completed last month, provided engineers with valuable insights into the performance of this innovative solar-electric drone at the edge of the atmosphere.
Innovative Design for Extended Flight
As a High-altitude Long Endurance (HALE) vehicle, the PHASA-35® (which stands for Persistent High Altitude Solar Aircraft) harnesses solar energy during daylight hours and relies on batteries at night. This combination of long-lasting batteries and efficient solar technology enables the aircraft to potentially sustain flight for up to a year in the upper atmosphere. The unique aerodynamic design and cutting-edge solar technology position the PHASA-35® as a transformative player in the aerospace sector.
Strategic Partnership with BAE Systems
In October 2022, Amprius announced a three-year collaboration with BAE Systems, focusing on exploring business opportunities through the integration of Amprius’ silicon anode batteries into electric products being developed in the UK.
Statements from Leadership
Dr. Kang Sun, CEO of Amprius, expressed pride in the partnership, stating, “We are honored to support BAE Systems in the development of the PHASA-35®. This ultralight platform offers a flexible option to customary systems like satellites and conventional aircraft. As we advance our next-generation silicon anode batteries, we are excited to enhance the capabilities of the PHASA-35.”
Dave Corfield, CEO of Prismatic, emphasized the importance of collaboration, noting, “Working with exceptional partners like Amprius has been vital in positioning PHASA-35 as a leading solution for next-generation applications in long-endurance, high-altitude operations and communications. Our technology holds significant potential for the future, with applications ranging from disaster response to border security, providing a compelling alternative to traditional airborne and satellite systems.”
