Belgian Defense Strengthens Underwater Operations with Advanced ROVs

Exail is poised to supply six R7 remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to the Belgian defense Forces, aimed at bolstering the capabilities of the Belgian Armed Forces in the inspection adn neutralization of underwater explosive ordnance (EOD).

Advanced Features for EOD Missions

The R7 is specifically designed for EOD operations, featuring a specialized payload that includes a neutralization charge. Its advanced positioning systems, which incorporate an Inertial Navigation System (INS), Doppler Velocity Log (DVL), and Ultra-Short Baseline (USBL) sensors, ensure precise maneuverability. Additionally, the ROV is outfitted with a multibeam sonar and an Orphie 12S camera, enabling accurate target detection and identification even in challenging underwater environments.

Versatility and Deployment

This state-of-the-art ROV is not only compact and cost-effective but also versatile, making it easy to deploy from small vessels like Rigid-Hulled inflatable Boats (RHIBs) or directly from shore. Its design allows for the integration of a robotic arm and various payloads, enhancing its capability to undertake a diverse array of missions.

Commitment to Safety and Security

Nicolas Astruc, Managing Director of ROV at Exail, expressed gratitude towards the Belgian Defense for their confidence in the R7 ROV, stating, “This order from a nation recognized for its proficiency in underwater operations underscores the R7’s effectiveness in protecting critical infrastructure, conducting explosive ordnance disposal, and performing inspections at depths of up to 300 meters.”

Belgian Defense officials remarked, “The integration of R7 ROVs into the Belgian Navy signifies a major leap forward in safeguarding our waters, especially for EOD inspections and removals, as well as ensuring the security of ports, coastal regions, vessels, and vital infrastructure.”

“This initiative reflects the Navy’s dedication to enhancing its operational capabilities while prioritizing the safety of personnel and the environmental integrity of their operational areas.”
