Boxfish Robotics: Enhancing Image Quality for AUVs

Boxfish Robotics has upgraded its AUV's 4K camera head with separate domes for stereo and 4K cameras, enhancing image quality and 3D machine vision capabilities

Boxfish Robotics: Enhancing Image Quality for AUVs

Boxfish Robotics has enhanced the 4K video and imaging capabilities for its autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), building on its previous designs with an improved AUV 4K camera head.

The Boxfish ROV (remotely operated vehicle) and Boxfish Alpha already feature large sensor cameras, providing enhanced image quality.

The Boxfish Luna, the company’s cinematic flagship, houses a professional-grade 50M, 8K 10-bit full-frame sensor camera, earning recognition from global filmmakers and producers.

Enhanced Autonomous Systems
The company has now applied its imaging expertise to the Boxfish autonomous systems and robotics.

The Boxfish AUV and ARV-i systems incorporate a 20MP, 4K video camera for high-quality video, alongside stereo machine vision cameras for autonomous navigation.

Additionally, optimized lighting solutions ensure quality video in poor visibility conditions.

4K Camera Head Redesign
The initial design housed both the large 4K camera and two machine vision cameras in a single dome.

While this allowed the use of existing 1,000m optics from its ROV systems, it posed challenges for machine vision accuracy due to the positioning of the machine vision cameras.

Boxfish redesigned the camera head, introducing a second generation with individual domes for each stereo camera and a larger dome for the main 4K camera. The new dome design better matches the 4K camera’s lens, resulting in improved image quality and enhanced 3D machine vision capabilities.

Future Innovations
Boxfish will continue to innovate in underwater imaging for autonomous systems, aiming to redefine how users perceive and understand the underwater world.

The company aims to push the boundaries of underwater imaging technology, setting new standards in the autonomous underwater robotics industry.

Image quality is crucial in autonomous underwater exploration. Boxfish Robotics prioritizes superior image quality in its underwater robotics products. Its ROVs are known for exceptional video quality, precise control, and maneuverability.
