Innovative UAV Surveillance for the Canadian Coast Guard

Kongsberg Geospatial has been chosen by Defense Research adn Development Canada (DRDC) to pilot a cutting-edge UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) surveillance system tailored for the Canadian Coast Guard. This advanced system integrates MartinUAV’s V-BAT with Kongsberg’s MIDAS sensor data management platform.

V-BAT: A Versatile UAV Solution

The V-BAT is a unique fixed-wing UAV that features vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities, making it ideal for operations in confined spaces, such as the decks of ships. This long-endurance drone can accommodate various sensors, enabling extensive surveillance over both land and maritime areas.

Real-Time Data Processing with MIDAS

The MIDAS system enhances the UAV’s functionality by allowing a multitude of sensor data, including full-motion video, to be processed and analyzed in near real-time by personnel aboard Canadian Coast Guard vessels. This capability enables the comparison of historical data with live feeds from the mission area, utilizing advanced tools for motion and object detection.Such analytical prowess significantly boosts the operational effectiveness of UAVs across diverse mission scenarios.

Technological Foundations of MIDAS

MIDAS is built on technologies developed for the NATO Alliance Ground Surveillance initiative, which focused on the efficient storage and retrieval of extensive intelligence data for analysts. This system addresses a critical gap where many UAVs lack the ability to process, exploit, and distribute (PED) their sensor data effectively. MIDAS offers a fully compliant system in a tactical, portable format suitable for ships and temporary command centers.

Enhanced Surveillance Capabilities

The integration of the Martin UAV V-BAT with the Kongsberg MIDAS system empowers Coast Guard vessels to significantly broaden their surveillance capabilities for search and rescue operations, as well as for monitoring iceberg movements, all without the need for manned aircraft.

Expert Insights on UAV Effectiveness

Ranald McGillis,President of Kongsberg Geospatial, stated: “While UAVs are invaluable tools, their true potential is realized only when they can gather sensor data that translates into actionable intelligence. Our MIDAS system enables users to fully leverage raw sensor data, generating critical insights at the tactical level where the UAV is deployed. In search and rescue scenarios, this could involve utilizing infrared sensors or near real-time motion detection to locate individuals in challenging visibility or whether conditions.”
