Creating a Tailored Weatherproof Gimbal for Enhanced Power Line Inspection Drones

HD Air Studio has released the following case study detailing the creation of a custom weatherproof gimbal for power line inspection with a

HD Air Studio has published a comprehensive case study showcasing the advancement of a bespoke weather-resistant gimbal designed for power line inspections utilizing a fixed-wing UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle).

client Overview

KVS Technologies specializes in offering power companies a secure and effective method for monitoring the status of their overhead power lines. Their innovative AI-powered software allows drones to perform autonomous inspections for their clients.

Project Overview

KVS Technologies required a gimbal compatible with the Sony UMC-R10C camera, a specialized model for which no pre-existing gimbals were available. As power grid inspections occur in various weather conditions, KVS Technologies sought a camera stabilizer that was not only mechanically robust but also resistant to the elements.

HD Air Studio’s Approach to the Challenge

  • HD Air Studio crafted a custom gimbal design that integrated seamlessly, both mechanically and electronically, with the Sony UMC-R10C camera and the specific drone platform utilized by KVS technologies.
  • A weatherproofing solution was engineered for the entire gimbal, safeguarding it against moisture, dust, and humidity.
  • The project was designed as a ready-to-deploy solution and was delivered within a swift timeframe.

To fulfill KVS Technologies’ demanding specifications, HD Air Studio carefully selected components that were both sturdy and lightweight. The gimbal was constructed using carbon fiber and lightweight aluminum alloys, achieving an impressive strength-to-weight ratio. Weatherproofing was accomplished thru liquid sealing, chosen for its flexibility and durability. The production methods employed in the gimbal’s creation included CNC machining, FDM, and SLA 3D printing.

The sony UMC-R10C gimbal developed by HD air Studio offers extensive integration options for the client. It features continuous rotation capabilities in the pan axis and includes a built-in slip ring connector for serial interaction and power supply.

Outcomes and Future Enhancements

A calibrated prototype of the Sony UMC-R10C gimbal was initially delivered. Following testing of this first unit, additional enhancements were made to the gimbal’s design. These improvements included a waterproof enclosure for the camera and a custom connector to facilitate communication between the camera and computer.
