Dome vs. Flat Ports: Which is Best for Stunning Underwater Photography?

In this article, optical component supplier Knight Optical compares two of its most popular windows for underwater camera devices – Dome

This article explores a comparison between two leading optical components for underwater cameras,Dome Ports and Flat Ports, provided by Knight Optical.

Comparing Dome Ports and Flat Ports

Working in underwater settings presents a myriad of challenges, particularly for photography and imaging tasks. Whether utilizing a handheld underwater camera for capturing stunning images of marine life or employing a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) equipped with advanced imaging tools to relay crucial data back to land, both humans and machines face similar visual hurdles when submerged.

Knight Optical

provides a diverse selection of optical components designed for underwater camera systems, enabling users to explore the mysteries beneath the waves. This article delves into a comparison of two of our most sought-after optical windows for underwater cameras: Dome Ports and Flat Ports.

Typically, these windows serve to protect essential components, such as safeguarding lenses from water exposure in underwater cameras. However, they also offer additional advantages, including enhancing the photographer’s ability to capture stunning images.

dome Ports

Dome Ports are widely used in underwater camera housings, particularly in systems equipped with wide-angle lenses that aim to capture expansive scenes. They excel in underwater photography and are particularly effective for split-shot images, which showcase both above-water and underwater landscapes. Additionally, Dome Ports help mitigate issues related to refraction and correct optical aberrations.

the design of a dome features two curved surfaces, making it inherently suitable for high-pressure underwater conditions. These ports are not only utilized in handheld cameras but are also integral to submersible ROVs.

High-Pressure Optical Domes

Flat Ports

In contrast to Dome Ports, Flat Ports provide unique advantages for photographers. They are typically paired with macro lenses, as they offer greater image magnification compared to Dome Ports, earning them the nickname ‘macro Ports’ in underwater photography.

Flat Ports are generally used with lenses that are 35mm or larger, accommodating a maximum diagonal field of View (FOV) of 63º, which is the upper limit for these ports (unlike Domes, which can handle wider FOVs).

In essence, this means that wide-angle lenses are best suited for Dome Ports, while macro lenses are ideal for Flat Ports, allowing for close-up, highly detailed imagery.

A Comprehensive Selection of Flat Ports from Knight Optical

Whether you need a specific substrate for flawless images or a unique size to fit a particular camera model, Knight Optical offers a variety of stock and custom Flat Windows that are perfect for underwater photography.

Our Precision Window collection is the most popular choice in the underwater photography community. These windows are designed to seal optical enclosures and are available for next-day dispatch from our stock catalog.

Constructed from BK7 (or equivalent) materials, our Precision Windows come in various diameters and thicknesses, with options for Anti-Reflective (AR) coated or non-AR coated versions.
