EMCORE Corporation Partners with Kratos for Advanced IMU Supply
EMCORE Corporation has established a significant long-term supply agreement with kratos Unmanned Aerial Systems to provide its leading Quartz MEMS Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), specifically the SDI500 model.
Unmatched Performance of the SDI500
The SDI500 is distinguished as the sole MEMS IMU that achieves true tactical-grade performance, boasting a gyro bias stability of 1.0°/hr and an acceleration bias stability of 1 mg across an extensive temperature range from -55 °C to +85 °C.
In a comprehensive study commissioned by the U.S. Military, the SDI500 was recognized as the top performer in accuracy among 19 competing IMUs. This series has also secured notable contracts, including those for the U.S. Navy’s MK 48 heavyweight and MK 54 lightweight torpedo initiatives.
Supporting Cutting-Edge Defense Programs
This supply agreement will enhance several advanced unmanned aerial defense initiatives, notably the XQ-58 Valkyrie.
The Kratos XQ-58 Valkyrie is a stealthy,high-performance unmanned combat aerial vehicle designed for long-range missions at high-subsonic speeds. Initially developed for the U.S.Air Force’s Low-Cost Attritable Strike Demonstrator program, it is now contracted with various Department of Defense clients.
As a revolutionary, cost-effective tactical Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), the XQ-58 is redefining the landscape of tactical UAS technology.
Expanding IMU Applications
Beyond the XQ-58 Valkyrie, EMCORE is also set to provide SDI500 IMUs for additional platforms, including the BQM-167A Air Force Subscale Aerial Target (AFSAT), the BQM-177A Sub-Sonic Aerial Target (SSAT), and the MQM-178 Firejet aerial target drone.
The BQM-167A serves as a subscale aerial target for the U.S. air Force, offering aviators realistic and comprehensive training for weapons release.
The BQM-177A represents the U.S. Navy’s next-generation SSAT, designed to simulate formidable threats for air-to-air engagements and sea-skimming anti-ship cruise missile scenarios.
The MQM-178 Firejet fulfills various roles in weapons release training, including both surface-to-air and air-to-air scenarios.
Leadership Insights on the Partnership
“We are incredibly proud to forge this long-term supply partnership with Kratos Unmanned Aerial Systems, supporting their critical unmanned aerial tactical and target defense systems for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. navy,” stated Jeff Rittichier, President and CEO of EMCORE. “The SDI500 IMU’s exceptional reliability and accuracy, even in demanding conditions, along with its proven market success, were pivotal in our selection for these vital unmanned programs.”
Steve Fendley, President of Kratos Unmanned Systems Division, remarked, “EMCORE has been a trusted supplier, enabling our UAS to meet the performance expectations of our military clients. this evolution to a partnership reflects kratos’ confidence in EMCORE’s systems and ensures our users can rely on the long-term availability of this essential technology, especially amid current supply chain challenges. As we continue to expand and enhance Kratos’ system offerings, we look forward to integrating EMCORE’s solutions into our aircraft.”
