Hargrave Technologies, previously known as Advanced power Drives, has unveiled an innovative range of professional motor control and power supply solutions tailored for systems integrators and OEMs in the UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) sector. These cutting-edge motor controllers are entirely designed and produced in Australia, catering to both commercial and defense applications, making them an excellent choice for companies seeking NDAA-compliant ESCs.
The inaugural product in Hargrave’s series, the microDRIVE LP,is capable of delivering a continuous current of up to 60A,with peak currents reaching 110A for short bursts of up to 10 seconds. It boasts DroneCAN connectivity, an IP-67-rated heatsink, and is supplied ready for immediate use with all necessary cables and connectors. Unmanned Systems Technology spoke with Felix Schulz,Head of Sales at Hargrave technologies,to explore the advantages and features of the microDRIVE LP.
Which UAV types are compatible with the microDRIVE LP – multirotors, helicopters, or fixed-wing drones? Is it designed for specific MTOWs (maximum takeoff weights) or NATO UAS classifications?
the microDRIVE LP, compliant with NDAA standards, is versatile enough to be utilized across various defense platforms and missions, especially within Group 2 / NATO class I. The MTOW can differ based on the specific configuration, but a common submission woudl involve a quad rotor VTOL with a 25kg MTOW.
Does the microDRIVE LP feature any unique algorithms or operational modes tailored for specific UAV types?
The ESCs (electronic speed controllers) within the GateKEEPER platform are engineered for seamless integration into a broad spectrum of applications right from the start. Additionally,we provide over 80 customizable parameters that allow for further optimization for particular aircraft. Our firmware is developed entirely in-house,enabling rapid customization to address specialized requirements.
In comparison to Hargrave’s earlier products, which performance metrics have seen the most notable improvement with the new microDRIVE LP design?
The GateKEEPER platform has undergone evolutionary enhancements throughout its architecture, with a standout feature being our proprietary motor control algorithm, FOCAL. This algorithm merges the low-speed efficiency of Field Oriented control (FOC) with the high-speed capabilities of trapezoidal drive.
The FOCAL algorithm is adaptable to various motors, ensuring optimal efficiency and swift response across the entire operational range without the need for tuning. Furthermore, gatekeeper includes advanced logging features, comprehensive DroneCAN support,IP-rated enclosures, propeller parking, and sensored motor control.
Which drone flight controllers can the microDRIVE LP work with?
The GateKEEPER is compatible with any flight controller that supports DroneCAN, PWM, or DShot communication, with enhanced features available through DroneCAN. We collaborate closely with the Ardupilot advancement team to guarantee compatibility and conduct extensive testing with PX4.
The microDRIVE LP platform can optionally be provided with NDAA compliance – what does this process involve?
NDAA regulations are intricate and subject to annual changes, but the primary aspect of compliance involves sourcing critical components from allied countries only.even units that are not NDAA-compliant benefit from our engineering, manufacturing, and testing processes, all of which take place in Australia.
Is calibration necessary for the microDRIVE LP? If so, can end users perform this easily?
The GateKEEPER is designed to function with nearly any motor right out of the box, continuously optimizing drive parameters to maximize performance. Our controllers can be paired with our cross-platform Configurator tool, which allows users to modify various settings, including drive modes, data logging rates, and protection responses, as well as update firmware. all these features are accessible via DroneCAN.
Additionally, Hargrave technologies’ new product line includes integratable ESCs like the nanoDRIVE 4LPi, along with high-voltage 120V ESC and power supply solutions.
