Nokia launches First CE-Certified 5G Automated Drone-in-a-Box Solution

nokia has achieved a significant milestone by introducing the first CE-certified, all-in-one drone-in-a-box solution, tailored to meet the increasing needs of various sectors, including public safety, smart city initiatives, construction, energy, and defense.

this CE certification ensures compliance wiht the European union’s safety standards. The Nokia Drone Networks solution utilizes both public and private 4G/LTE and 5G networks to enhance situational awareness for first responders and other professionals.

Manufactured in Europe, this solution includes Nokia drones, a docking station, a dual gimbal camera, and edge cloud processing powered by Nokia MX Industrial Edge (MXIE).

By leveraging both public and private 4G/LTE and 5G networks, customers can enjoy enhanced reliability. The use of cellular connectivity not only provides higher data rates but also reduces latency, allowing for more efficient data streaming compared to conventional Wi-Fi.The integration of Real-Time Kinetic (RTK) positioning facilitates beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations, significantly improving situational awareness. The dual modem connectivity enables Nokia drones to connect to multiple networks simultaneously, adhering to the redundancy requirements set by aviation regulatory authorities.

This innovative solution can be operated remotely for various applications, including search and rescue missions and damage assessments in hazardous environments. Additionally, Nokia drones can be programmed for autonomous scheduled flights, enhancing security at large events or conducting routine inspections of remote equipment. The docking station not only safeguards the drone and its payload, such as sensor devices or dual gimbal cameras, from environmental hazards but also charges the drone in readiness for its next mission.

When paired with Nokia MXIE, data collected by Nokia drones can be processed in real-time at the edge cloud. An open API framework allows agencies and businesses to integrate pre-existing Nokia and third-party applications, unlocking a range of compelling use cases for drone automation in public safety and Industry 4.0, including object detection, tracking, and network analysis.

Nokia has already showcased the capabilities of the Nokia Drone Networks solution in collaboration with the New York Power Authority, utilizing private LTE for transmission line inspections.

Thomas Eder, Head of Embedded Wireless Solutions at Nokia, stated: “Our goal is to transform the industrial UAV landscape, enhancing situational awareness for search and rescue, surveillance, and various UAV operations across multiple sectors. The Nokia Drone Networks solution is designed to meet the remote operation standards set by aviation regulatory bodies like EASA in Europe and the FAA in the United States. This positions us to meet the rising market demands as a extensive provider with a solution developed and manufactured in Europe. The unique features that allow integration with third-party applications will facilitate the evolution of drones into flying data collection platforms, leveraging dependable 4G and 5G edge cloud connectivity.”

Depending on the configuration,Nokia drones can achieve flight durations exceeding 50 minutes and cover distances greater than 30 km,thanks to their innovative hardware design, integrated software advancements, and robust 4G/5G connectivity.
