DeTect Inc has unveiled what it touts as the first-ever dual-purpose radar system for detecting both birds and drones, now operational at U.S. military sites.
Originally developed in 2003 for real-time birdstrike prevention, the MERLIN BDR-DDR has evolved to incorporate TRUE3D technology, enabling it to detect both avian and unmanned aerial vehicles simultaneously. This innovative system is designed for use at military airfields, training grounds, and commercial airports.
“This dual-functionality represents a important advancement for air bases and civilian airports, allowing them to utilize a single system for monitoring both birds and drones,” stated Project Manager Mike Bierman after implementing the system at a U.S. Air Force Base in California. “DeTect’s advanced multibeam TRUE3D radar continuously scans and updates target details across a comprehensive 3D space, reaching distances of over 5 kilometers in all weather conditions, 24/7.”
The radar technology can be seamlessly integrated with radar-guided electro-optical and infrared camera systems, as well as the DroneWatcher RF-DR for radiofrequency drone detection and mitigation. The system is available in both fixed and mobile configurations, fully equipped with all necessary hardware, software, and integration components.
