Introducing Iridium Certus 100: A new Era in Satellite Connectivity
Iridium Communications Inc. has officially launched its iridium Certus 100 service, a versatile midband solution tailored for maritime, land mobile, Internet of Things (IoT), aviation, and governmental sectors.
Enhanced Satellite connectivity for Diverse Applications
The Iridium Certus 100 offers a distinctive combination of features that facilitate satellite connectivity. It supports compact, low-profile antennas and battery-operated devices, ensuring optimal mobility while delivering IP data speeds that effectively transmit essential images, emails, and othre critical facts from remote locations.
Applications in Autonomous and Remote Systems
This innovative service is particularly suited for autonomous vehicles, including unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs), and Unmanned surface Vehicles (USVs). It also enables remote monitoring of facilities and equipment, and also new personal communication devices that support messaging, image sharing, and low-resolution video. The portability of the equipment allows for battery operation or integration into onboard communication systems for vessels, aircraft, and connected vehicles.
Meeting Market Demands with New solutions
Iridium Certus 100 launches alongside a variety of new products from iridium Connected partners, addressing the growing need for satellite communication solutions that require compact form factors and mobile equipment powered by batteries or direct connections. This service is capable of two-way IP data transmission and high-quality voice services, paving the way for new classes of connected devices.
Robust Capabilities for Modern Communication
With midband speeds, Iridium Certus 100 supports a range of applications, including email, messaging platforms like WhatsApp, media sharing, telemetry reporting, file transfers, internet access, and up to two simultaneous high-quality voice calls. When paired with advanced data compression technologies from Iridium partners, it also facilitates low-resolution video transmission for surveillance and monitoring purposes.
scalable and Flexible Service Platform
As one of the most sophisticated L-band satellite service platforms available, Iridium Certus offers the versatility to adjust device speeds, sizes, and power requirements according to user needs. Delivered through the upgraded Iridium satellite constellation, this service transcends traditional connectivity solutions, providing a platform for partners to develop specialized broadband, midband, and narrowband applications, all made possible by Iridium’s unique crosslinked L-band network.
Partner products and Future Innovations
Iridium has already certified over a dozen new partner-built products that ensure weather-resistant connections with speeds up to 88 Kbps, with additional products in the pipeline. “Our Iridium Certus 100 midband service is crafted for applications that are agile and remote, requiring more throughput than our traditional narrowband offerings, without the need for the larger antennas associated with our broadband solutions,” stated Iridium CEO Matt Desch. “the influx of new products from our partners indicates that we are fulfilling a crucial need in the satellite communications market.”
Highlighted Partner Solutions
Among the initial offerings are the SkyLink by Blue Sky Network and the LT-4100 by Lars Thrane. SkyLink serves as a dual-mode data management solution for land, air, sea, and IoT applications, already selected for integration into UAV and USV systems. Its adaptable design, featuring efficient size, weight, and power characteristics, makes it ideal for mid-sized vessels, vehicles, remote monitoring stations, and industrial IoT applications.
The LT-4100, designed for professional mariners, particularly in deep-sea fishing and workboat operations, also appeals to the leisure market with its IP data capabilities for messaging and email. Engineered to endure harsh maritime conditions, it includes two high-quality voice lines as standard.
Emerging Solutions in Development
Additional solutions nearing commercial release or currently in beta testing include the Flylogix UAV system, Ground Control’s RockRemote, McQ CONNECT, and NAL Research’s Quicksilver (QS-100). The Flylogix UAV system is utilized for routine offshore emissions monitoring and infrastructure inspections, providing real-time data delivery to clients across various regions.
Ground Control’s RockREMOTE is an IP-based, dual-mode LTE-satellite communication solution tailored for industrial IoT applications, ideal for remote sites managed by utilities, renewable energy, and oil and gas sectors. It enhances asset management with a full Linux OS and integrated storage, enabling edge computing for improved intelligence, security, and cost-effectiveness.
McQ CONNECT is a compact satcom modem designed for government applications, capable of real-time data transmission over IP networks. It can enhance existing McQ devices, such as the McQ Owl, to transmit video and high-quality images, or function as a standalone communication device for mobile assets. Data is securely transmitted in real-time through a Cloud network, facilitating global command and control of remote assets.
Lastly, the NAL Research QUICKSILVER (QS-100) is engineered for demanding government missions and commercial applications. It supports both standalone and embedded platform integration, ensuring reliable communication in challenging environments worldwide. With its midband speeds and compact design, Quicksilver is ideal for maintaining connectivity, whether for data links, command and control of unmanned systems, or diagnostic monitoring applications.
