Kongsberg Geospatial Unveils IRIS UxS 2.0: A Leap Forward in Drone Management
Kongsberg Geospatial has introduced IRIS UxS 2.0, a substantially upgraded version of its Fleet Control Station and Airspace Management System tailored for unmanned aerial systems (UAS). This innovative platform equips drone operators with superior situational awareness, advanced navigation tools, and essential safety features for beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations. Simultaneously, it offers airspace managers a comprehensive view of airspace conditions by integrating data from various real-time feeds and sensors.
Evolution of the IRIS System
The IRIS system originated as a prototype derived from air defense technologies, aimed at ensuring safe BVLOS missions for civilian drone operators. The first commercial iteration launched in 2017, and since then, it has seen continuous enhancements and feature additions.
Advanced Monitoring and Control Capabilities
The Kongsberg geospatial IRIS UxS Fleet Control Station technology allows a single operator to oversee and manage multiple drones concurrently. It offers real-time calculations for aircraft separation, alerts for airspace monitoring, and predictions for communication line-of-sight,all crucial for safe BVLOS operations. By integrating various real-time data sources, including ADS-B,local radar, and National Airspace Feeds,IRIS uxs generates vital “detect and avoid” warnings. The system also features real-time 2D and 3D visualizations of airborne tracks and weather conditions, along with geo-fencing functionalities.
Widespread Adoption Across Industries
IRIS UxS has gained traction among drone delivery startups in North America and is utilized for BVLOS inspections of electrical transmission lines and oil and gas pipelines. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in airspace security monitoring and emergency operations, facilitating the integration of drones with existing air traffic for various law enforcement and security agencies.
Enhanced Performance with TerraLens 9.1
the latest version, IRIS UxS 2.0, is powered by the cutting-edge Kongsberg Geospatial TerraLens 9.1 engine, which delivers rapid 3D mapping and terrain performance on expansive 4K displays. The system features a completely redesigned user interface and introduces numerous new capabilities, including support for additional sensors, a live national airspace data feed, and integrated autopilots, enabling operators to manage drones directly through the IRIS platform.
Acknowledgment in the Industry
Recently, the Kongsberg IRIS UxS Fleet Control and Airspace Management system was recognized as a finalist for the Xcellence Award in the Detect-and-Avoid category by AUVSI.
“we are thrilled to receive recognition from a prestigious institution like AUVSI,” stated Ranald McGillis, President of Kongsberg Geospatial. “The Xponential show serves as an excellent platform to showcase our technology.”
